Poinsettias

Tis the season … for beautiful poinsettias to adorn our homes and my more traditional Christmas page celebrates these pretty flowers with some additional sparkle and shine (grin!).

I used a poinsettia napkin to create the background which was 3-ply so I split it into its separate layers. I started by sticking the second layer to the page using a UHU Stic and then I cut it to fit the page; this napkin layer covered the page in lightly coloured poinsettia images. Then I ripped the top layer of napkin around some of the poinsettia images and used Liquitex Matte Gel Medium to stick them down so I could outline and define the poinsettias using a Derwent Graphik marker without the ink being absorbed and leaking into the napkin. When all the glues were dry I distressed the light poinsettia images using some tacky masking tape to rip and remove patches of the napkin. I then covered the page with a layer of Liquitex Matte Gel Medium to ensure all the napkin edges were held in place. When dry, I added the glittery gold flowers, holly garlands, circles and dots which are all outline stickers.  Then I added more sparkle and shine by outlining the poinsettia petals using Icicle Ranger Stickles and by adding dots of Christmas Red Ranger Stickles to the poinsettia centres, gold flowers, circles and berries. It was well worth taking the time to apply the Stickles as the twinkley detail and finish looks amazing. The focal poinsettia saying is a sticker by Penny Black which reads:

“These Poinsettias are opening wide to wish you Cheer for the Christmastide”

I mounted the sticker onto some recycled card that I had covered with glittery gold by using the outline sticker surround. I then cut the card to size using some serrated scissors and edged it with a gold metallic marker. I also arranged some of the holly garland outline stickers around the edges and coloured the berries using the Christmas Red Stickles. It is stuck into place using double-sided tape which finished the page.

Every year I make a yummy cocktail which is also called a Poinsettia, they are made with 1 part Cointreau (orange liqueur), 3 parts prosecco and 3 parts cranberry juice. Here’s my cocktail pictured with my hubby’s home-brewed Christmas beer. In the background you can see a stollen that I made as a special Christmas treat and of course my cute little poinsettia. As T Stands for Tuesday I’m sharing our drinks with the T Gang and wishing you a Happy T Day!

Challenges

I’m always enjoy taking part in Challenge Blogs, they provide me with inspiration for my pages and are a wonderful way to meet like-minded arty people. So here are the challenges I’m joining today:

I’m also pleased to join the “Christmas with optional Reds, Greens and Rust” challenge over at Country View Challenges.

  1. This is fabulous Jo! I would celebrate if I could just keep a Poinsettia for much longer than a couple of weeks (I have the same problem with Cyclamen) My eye zoomed in past your lovely cocktail to the Stollen – banned for me at the moment but I can imagine the aroma! Thank you for joining us at Try It On Tuesday and Happy T Day to you! Hugs, Chrisx

  2. Your poinsettia page is so beautiful. Your poinsettia cocktail looks so pretty in your stemware. The cocktail might be nice to try for the Eldest and me. Might have to try making stollen, too

    • Many thanks dear Rike! It’s so glittery and cheers up by craftroom no end …lol 😉. The home-brewed beer is so good, hubby adds cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, orange peel and honey when he is brewing it so it smells and tastes very Christmassy! So glad you joined in the T Day fun and wishing you a very Happy T Day too! J 😊

  4. Your poinsettia page might be traditional but it is just gorgeous Jo. I love the little gold sparkle it seems to have too. But I am very interesting in your drink. I have never heard of that and I think I need to try that instead of a mimosa on Christmas. It looks very festive. 🙂 Happy T day Jo. Hope it’s a good one. Hugs-Erika

  6. Love your Poinsettia page and the cocktail sounds so good. Even your hubby’s home brew looks good and I”m not much of a beer drinker. l’m thinking the Butterscotch Moonshine I have will be the Christmas drink of the year here. 🙂 It’s so good but a little bit goes a long way 🙂
Thanks for stopping by. my blog. The Christmas cups were a gift from my daughter who knows I love Mary Englebright.

    • Thank you! Your butterscotch moonshine sounds so yummy 😁. I had butterscotch vodka one Christmas and it was delicious! Your daughter is so thoughtful, they are such a lovely gift 😁. Hope you feel better soon and wishing you a Happy T Day my friend! J😊

  7. I love your poinsettias! I can keep them alive, but I can never get the color back. It’s just too cold here or something so they survive but don’t thrive. I love them while they last, though 🙂

Most cocktail recipes I see have a kajillion ingredients lol, but I might actually be able to make this one. Thx!

  9. It’s another magical set of techniques here, Jo. The second napkin layer “trick”, ripping and distressing, and all sorts of other artistic methods and original ideas. The finished page looks absolutely terrific. I would seriously love to see your art in person, it’s pure art.
That’s funny but I have never thought of making a stollen, it seems like something foreign which appears for a very short time at Christmas. I’m off to investigate some recipes on the Internet……….and I’ve just found the recipe in Delia’s Christmas book, it uses yeast and marzipan, well I never – and she says you can toast it for breakfast. Thanks for the idea.
Thanks so much for your fourth entry to the AJJ challenge, they are all beautiful.

    • Thanks very much Sheila, you are very kind! The second layer of napkin had such a lovely design on it that I just couldn’t waste it …lol 😉. Homemade stollen is so much better than shop bought and I actually make the Delia recipe you found …lol! I love this Christmas recipe book and make quite a few treats from it at Christmastime 😁. I always have homemade marzipan leftover from my Christmas cake so making stollen is the perfect way to use it up and it’s a nice treat leading up to Christmas too. I’ve never had it toasted for breakfast though, now there’s an idea …lol 😀. Have a wonderful week! J 😊

  10. I just love the multi-coloured Penny Black image! But the background is a great example of textural Mixed Media full of interest. Thanks for showing us at Country View Challenges.
    Merry Christmas, Jo!

  11. A fabulous page Jo, so colourful. I love the bright red of Poinsettia and Christmas wouldn’t be the same without one. Your cocktail sounds very nice, might just have to try one.
