Summer is here and its BBQ time once more, my hubby is a top chef when it comes to BBQ. At our house we BBQ American style with a smoker, adding wood chips to the charcoal to create a wonderful flavour. What’s better on a hot summer’s day then to spend time in the garden having a BBQ and a (home brewed) beer.
The background is diluted Distress ink, smooshed onto the page using an acrylic block. Next I added yellow and red acrylic paint splatters and left them to dry overnight, they turned out rich and glossy, just like I had spilt mustard and ketchup onto the page. The images are such fun and came from Hunkydory, I bought them last year and have been waiting for BBQ season to begin so I could use them. The menu is a greaseproof paper sheet that you can buy in a home store to serve your BBQ items on. I stuck them to the page using UHU Stic and outlined them with a black marker. To finish I added a pint of beer, this image was taken from a magazine, and the sentiment.
The title for this page was inspired by a sign we have in our kitchen.
BBQ at our house is a splendid affair, my hubby loves BBQ and cooks mouth-watering and delicious food, and his specialties are Apple Wood Smoked Ribs, Pulled Pork and Beer Butt Chicken – yummy yum yum! All served with home brewed beer of course – although occasionally we have happy accidents and the beer doesn’t go quite to plan.
This beer is what you call ‘Lively’ but once it settled down, tasted delicious as usual!

I’m with you. Those ribs looks delicious. We made some the other day too. BBQ and beer are the perfect combo. And I think your page is great. I love the big apron. Does your husband use one when he grills? Your page feels kind of retro and I LOVE that. have a great T day Jo. Hugs-Erika

Yes I love the retro feel of this page, it was fun to create! My hubby doesn’t wear an apron when he grills, but as the page was in homage to him he did actually chose the one I added to my page, he liked the mustard and ketchup splatters. Happy T Day Erica! J 🙂

I may have the only husband on earth who DOESN’T use the grill. It’s all up to me- but I don’t mind. Lucky you to get some cooking days off tho:) LOVE your BBQ inspired page-perfectly wonderful imagery. Happy T day!

Yes it’s nice my hubby is good at BBQ and I am so glad as it takes dedication – some meats take 18hrs to cook so he will start the smoker at 11pm if we are having a party and as he has wireless themometer with alarm he has been known to get up during the night (2am once) if the temparature drops. Happy T day! J 🙂

Your husband and I have something in common. We both like to barbecue, even though I’m a vegetarian. Apple wood is wonderful, but my favorite is cherry. A friend gave me logs from a felled cherry tree one year and I cherish it because I have very little left. I also use various juices in the water pan which also helps infuse the meat. I would love to cook with your husband some day, but he would probably win since I haven’t cooked barbecue in several years.
LOVE that journal spread. You always put so much work into your art journal pages. That smoosh technique is one I tried on an IC that failed. Yours turned out perfectly.
I might be able to keep up with your husband’s barbecue, but he is the genuine winner when it comes to beer making. So glad you shared this and your art and barbecue ribs with us for T this Tuesday.

I love that you BBQ too, and my hubby can definitely wax lyrical with you about wood. His favourite woods are oak, apple and hickory, although he has never tried cherry, so it’s now on his wish list. The apple and oak wood he uses was given to him and he also uses juices like you do in the water pan :-). I find the smoosh technique works really well when I use a small acrylic block, that way I have more control on the placement and can build up the colour gradually by adding several layers. I also apply the ink directly to the block, spritz it with water then smoosh onto the page. It seems to work every time :-). Thanks so much, it’s always a pleasure to speak with you! Happy T Day! J 🙂
