On Halloween

Over at Try it on Tuesday our new challenge for the next two weeks is Halloween.

As I love owls, I just couldn’t resist buying the new Arthur Thinlits die set from Tim Holtz and using it to create this Halloween page. I also included a fabulous poem called “On Halloween”, it’s by Nina W. Walter – Happy Halloween!

I started by covering the background with Dioxazine Purple, Deep Violet and Vivid Lime Green acrylic paints using a baby wipe. Then I added the lines by scraping the paint with an old gift card and also applying more paint with the edge of the card; both of which were fun techniques.

Next I created the owl and branch using the Arthur Thinlits die set; cutting the 16 pieces from different coloured papers, edging them with some Black Soot Distress Ink using a blending tool and then piecing them altogether. I coloured the small feather detail that was embossed on the owl Thinlits pieces with an Orange Spectrum Aqua marker so they stood out more.

For the poem, I used a Sizzix Doodle Alphabet & Numbers Thinlits die set to cut out the letters from two different orange papers and then stuck them onto the page using Liquitex matte gel medium; this was a bit fiddly and time consuming (grin!). The poem, “On Halloween” by Nina W. Walter, reads:

The witches fly across the sky
The owls go,
Who? Who? Who?
The black cats yowl and the green ghosts howl,
Scary Halloween to you!

As T Stands for T Day, I’m sharing my cuppa today and a special treat from my hubby – Happy T Day!

He kindly bought me this box of marshmallow treats as part of my wedding anniversary present last week which are very yummy!

I hope that you’re all staying safe and well!

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. Well, that’s not happiness to see him, lol. Of course I love his expression, heehee. Very cool and colorful, love the bold colors. Wow, the way y’alls confections look are so different than ours in America or at least in Texas. That box would be melted in five minutes here…in January lol. I am just staring at how flawlessly formed and coated everything is. Enjoy! XXO

  2. You owl page is great. That owl is a great die. I guess he doesn’t like marshmallow treats-hee-hee. Your page is perfect for Halloween. And your treats looks so yummy. What a nice anniversary gift. In this Covid time right now something tasty is a good thing, since none of us are not going out like we might be otherwise. Hope you are safe and well. Hugs-Erika

  4. This is definitely a fun Halloween offering with your adorable owl and the classic Halloween colors. Really a fun entry. Thanks, too for sharing it with us at Art Journal Journey.

I’m not a fan of marshmallow, but those chocolate treats look absolutely incredible. So well made, too. My hats off to your husband for the anniversary gift. Love the cup of dark tea you shared with us, along with your beautiful art and your treats for T this Tuesday, dear Jo.

  5. What a sweet hubby to get you something yummy to celebrate ~ I love that owl! He requires a lot of die cutting and pasting but look at the results ~ He has quite the attitude, and will make fun cards with a snarky sentiment. Happy T day!

  6. Sixteen pieces to make the owl! That sounds mega fiddly but what a great owl. Same with the letters – “fiddly and time-consuming” – an understatement I think, but worth it artistically, they are perfect for the spooky poem. I would have been happy with that tremendous background with these three marvellous colours and the way you made the lines. I was going to ask what make the acrylics were then remembered that you always gave us a materials list – so thanks a lot for that.
I am covered in admiration for this piece and the owl is saying if you don’t win all the Halloween prizes he will be even more cross.

  11. Gosh that was fussy and fiddly and ever so time consuming! But the result is beautiful! I love the die-cut owl with a growl. And the poem is great, even though it was fiddly to do. The colors are so bright and the just shout Halloween!
You have a really good hubby there. One who buys you marshmellow treats. I am very partial to anything marshmellow. It is probably a good thing that I can’t get any in our neck of the woods.
    Happy belated T-Day,
    Hugs,
    Lisca

  13. Its an awesome die cut owl Jo, it must have taken a while to paper piece it. A fabulous Halloween page and poem.
Sorry I am late calling in, I hope your week is going well.

  14. What a fabulous hubby you have to buy you a treat like those marshmallows. They look very yummy and I am feeling the need for one of them, preferably one covered entirely in dark chocolate.
Sorry i got carried away with that – I love your page. What a fabulous owl he is – rather grumpy looking with his brows knitted in that fashion. I do like the fact that you didn’t paint the branch brown but used a rather apt shade of purple which marries perfectly with the lime and purple background. I cannot believe you wrote that poem entirely out of cut out letters. My goodness Jo, you have so much more patience than I have. Must say though that it looks good and I love the sentiment of it.
    Hugs, Neet xx

  15. A great page Jo and I love the owl, I’ve never been sure whether that’s his ‘wise’ look or his ‘grumpy’ look but I can just imagine him saying what’s all the fuss about! Love the vibrant background and of course that great poem. Your marshmallow treats look fab.

  16. The colours are brilliant, vibrant but all going together beautifully! The owl is a hoot too (ahem!). I did think, between Arthut and your poem all in small die-cut letters, that your page would have taken a LOT of time and patience… I hastily paged on down on the chocolate thingies, I’m hungry and I really shouldn’t touch the stuff…
