Art Colours Life

It’s a new month so we are launching our August challenge over at the Creative Artiste Challenge Blog, and as always the theme is Anything Mixed Media Goes.

Today’s mixed media art journal page was inspired by happy summer sunflowers and the beautiful quote by John Lubbock “Like the sun colours flowers, art colours life” which resonated with me. I hope you like it and that you are inspired to join us over at Creative Artiste; it would be lovely to see you there!

I started by applying Snowcone, Boysenberry, Bubble Gum and Lime Faber-Castell Gelatos, scribbling them onto the page and then smudging the colours with my finger which I had wet with water. Then I used a baby wipe to remove some of the Gelato colours through two different sizes of honeycomb stencils which gave the page depth and contrast. I used the smaller of the two Honeycomb stencils to add Rose Bud and Paris Dusk Memento Inks using a blending tool. Next I stamped an abstract numbers stamp from Kaisercraft and a Solar & Lunar stamp from Finnabair using black Archival Ink and then I stencilled Ranger Texture Paste through a Reversed Honeycomb stencil from That’s Crafty.

I had fun creating the large sunflower, drawing the petals and cutting them out of some design paper. The petals were coloured using Lemon and Limencello Faber-Castell Gelatos and a Dark Sepia Faber-Castell Big Brush marker which I also used to edge the petals. The centre of the sunflower was die cut from some glossy brown card stock to which I then applied Ranger Texture Paste through the Reversed Honeycomb stencil. To finish, I added the quote which I created using an alphabet X-Cut die set with some yellow paper. Like the sunflower, the letters were highlighted using Limencello Faber-Castell gelato and edged using a Dark Sepia Faber-Castell Big Brush marker.

All you need to do is to use three different mediums on your projects to join our Anything Mixed Media Goes Challenge. For more inspiration please check out the amazing creations from my fellow Design Team members over at Creative Artiste too.

We have sunflowers in our garden this year which have flowered beautifully …

… and as you can see the bees love them (grin!).

Hoping that you’re all staying safe and well! x

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. I never seem to remember there are other challenges than AJJ and TioT. Glad you posted this, because I love mixed media, so would LOVE to join this challenge.

You definitely have loads of color and a lovely flower, too. And I love how you created that background. There are so many things to see, I missed some the first time, especially when I was looking for the texture paste.

Your real sunflowers are as beautiful as your journal page. I know the bees are happy in your garden, Jo. I adore what you created.

  3. Hi Jo, this mixed media page is positively blooming with the beauty of that magnificent Sunflower, love the honeycomb inner and how bright it’s yellow petals are. The background is invigorating alongside those bold words, the technique used to remove colour from the background always creates fabulous art marks. A true beauty Jo as are your wonderful sunflowers.
Sending creative Hugs for a sunny weekend, don’t forget the sun cream :)) Tracey xx

  4. Jo, your art journal page is brilliant and full of sunshine! I love how you’ve used the honeycomb stencil in your background and the repetition on the sunflower center; what a stunning sunflower! And, being a lover of flowers and gardening, I’m totally in love with your real sunflowers in your garden! Thank you for sharing the photos as well as that wonderful art journal page with us at The Funkie Junkie Boutique challenge blog in our Stencilmania challenge–you hit the nail on the head!

  5. It must take you ages to write (and remember) how you made your works of art and to list the art materials too. As you know, I do appreciate it a lot.
This is such a happy page with its bright colours, honeycomb reminder of bees and the inspiring words.
There seems to be a lot of bees about this year, which is a blessing.
I love your actual sunflowers too. Ours are not out yet but will be soon.

    • Thanks so much Sheila! It doesn’t take too long, I always keep the materials in a tray as I use them and then write them in a book to remember what I used. For some reason I always remember the process that I followed too, not sure why …lol 😁. I hope you are enjoying the sunny weather! Take care and enjoy your sunflowers! Hugs, Jo x

  6. Wow Jo! what a gorgeously bold bright and colourful layout you made. The gelatos have done their job beautifully. Love all the bits and bobs you added and how lucky you have those beautiful sunflowers in your garden too. I can hear the bees humming with delight.
