Spread your wings

It’s a new month so we are launching our July challenge over at the Creative Artiste Challenge Blog, and as always the theme is Anything Mixed Media Goes.

I was inspired by summer damselflies and had fun playing around with lots of mixed media to create this art journal page.

I started by applying Twisted Citron and Mermaid Lagoon Distress Ink to the page using a blending tool and then spritzed with water so that the inks blended and dispersed over the page. When dry I applied some of the Twisted Citron Ink through a Shedded stencil by Andy Skinner and also wiped a baby wipe through the stencil to remove some of the ink.

I stamped some Vintage Circles using a stamp set from Woodware Craft Collection with Mermaid Lagoon Distress Ink and also some fern leaves using a Tim Holtz stamp set and Mowed Lawn Distress Ink. The black circles are stencilled using a Dutch Doobadoo stencil and Black Soot Distress Ink. I stamped the damselfly stamp which was free with a magazine using black Archival Ink so they look like they are flying around the page and then I splattered the page with Carbon Black Liquitex Ink. The wording “don’t forget to fly”, “with brave wings she flies” and “use your wings” are all Small Talk stickers from Tim Holtz.

The central “Until you spread your wings you’ll never know how far you’ll fly!” wording was created using a couple of Kaisercraft Journal Cards which I cut to size, dyed with Twisted Citron and Mermaid Lagoon Distress Ink and embellished with a black metal dragonfly brad. Then I edged them with a black Faber-Castell Big Brush marker and layered everything together with some pretty flowers and leaves which finished the page.

I hope that you are inspired to join our Anything Mixed Media Goes Challenge too! For more inspiration please check out the amazing creations from my fellow Design Team members over at Creative Artiste too – it would be lovely to see you there!

Here is the pretty blue damselfly that inspired this page. They are very similar to dragonflies but the easiest way tell them apart is when they are at rest like this one; damselflies fold their wings up and hold them together across the top of their backs whereas dragonflies hold their wings out perpendicular to their bodies when resting, like an airplane. This is a Common Blue Damselfly; it is fairly common throughout the UK and is seen from May through to September.

If you’re interested here are some more differences between damselflies and dragonflies (which made me think that the free stamp I used is a damselfly – grin!):

  • Damselflies have much smaller eyes than dragonflies and their eyes always have a gap between them whereas dragonflies wrap around the head from the side to the front of the face.
  • Damselflies have narrow bodies like twigs, whereas dragonflies have bulkier bodies giving it a shorter, thicker appearance.
  • Both dragonflies and damselflies have two sets of wings, damselflies have wings that are the same size and shape and dragonflies have hind wings that are larger than the front set of wings.

Hoping that you are all staying safe and keep well! x

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. What an incredible journal page, Jo. Just goes to show, I’m NEVER too old to learn something new, because I had never heard of a damselfly until now. I thought it was a fairy type at first, then I saw the damselfly. I was blown away by how different the two are (dragonfly and damselfly). They are so unique, too. What a great entry for Erika’s theme at Art Journal Journey, and what an awesome photo of a real one, too.

  2. Love this page with my favorite colors ~ I had no idea that their are so many different dragonflies ~I learned about damselflies from you today! I looked it up and we have them here too…now I’m going to have to look at the next one that lands more closely ~ Thank you for teaching me something new today 🙂 wonderful sentiments too ~

  3. Gorgeous page Jo, I love the blues/greens just now, so refreshing in summer. Love the stamped damselflies, so pretty, and the ‘real’ photo is lovely, too. I love watching them down by the lakes here. We used to have a lot in the garden here, but the pond had to be filled in in case children fell in. No children live here, and there’s no way to access the garden if you don’t live here, but authorities are sometimes crazy! Have a great weekend, have fun in your craftroom, I’m off to put my feet up! Hugs, Valerie

  4. WowJo, that information about the two different insects is well worth the read. I had no idea about all of that information and what a beautiful photograph you have shown us of the one on the rose. Did you take that yourself? If so I am suitably impressed.
I do like your journal page, the colours you have used look so good together and the yellow certainly looks hot and zingy. Love your central quote and the smaller ones that are dotted around the page with your damselflies and how you have married the quote with the whole page by the use of those pretty flowers.
Now I will check to see what I have on my various stamps – are they dragonflies (as I always thought) or damselflies?
    Hugs, Neet xx

    • Thanks so much Meet! I was surprised that the stamp was a damselfly but it was free with a magazine featuring “The Diary of an Edwardian Lady” so I thinking must have been one of her drawing 😀. Yes I did take the photo of the damselfly although he sat still for a long time unlike dragonflies which I can never capture as they don’t sit still for long …lol 😉. Happy weekend! Hugs, Jo x

  6. How interesting about the dragonfly and damselfly. I always enjoy your educational(!) bits. That is an astonishing photograph of a damselfly, so clear and showing the amazing metallic blue. I’ll be going cross-eyed trying to work out whether the next one I see is one or the other.
And then your art – always something different, original and complex. And you are using these Distress Ink colours Twisted Citron and Mermaid Lagoon which immediately make me want to buy the whole set. I did buy a dozen of the small ones recently, encouraged by your use of them. The damselflies flitting over your gorgeous background make a marvellous page and the blue flowers finish it beautifully.

    • Thanks so much Sheila! The Distress Inks I use are the small ones too, they are well worth the expense – I wouldn’t be without mine …lol 😀. I just have to remember that they reactivate when wet in any way (with water, other inks, blue, gel mediums etc) much like watercolours do. Enjoy and happy weekend! Hugs, Jo x

  10. I assumed damselfly and dragonfly were 2 different words for the same thing, maybe US vs UK English.. A fabulous page Jo, it has great stamping layers and lovely colours. Hope you are enjoying your weekend. x

  13. Beautiful colour choice Jo, well matched with the Damselfly I use to see so many of these as a child early morning fishing with my Grand (Dad). A sweet sentiment for them all spread their wings and fly. Another beautiful piece Hugs Tracey xx
