Tulips

It’s a new month so we are launching our May challenge over at the Creative Artiste Challenge Blog, and as always the theme is:

Anything Mixed Media Goes.

I was inspired by the beautiful tulips in my garden and had fun playing around with mixed media to create this Tulip art journal page. I hope you’ll join in the fun too; it would be lovely to see you there!

I started by ripping and fussy cutting a tulip napkin and then I stuck the pieces into place using a glue stick. I painted around the napkin pieces with Parchment Liquitex acrylic paint and while the paint was still wet I added some Vivid Green Liquitex acrylic paint using a palette knife so it matched the napkin background. When the paint was dry, I stamped a Script stamp from Kaisercraft using black Archival Ink and also a crackle texture stamp from BoBunny using Pistachio Memento Ink over the painted areas.

Then I added some Ranger Texture Paste using a heart stencil that I created with a Falling Hearts Thinlet set from Tim Holtz and when dry, the hearts were coloured using Red Violet, Crimson and Magenta Spectrum Aqua markers. Next I added the “Tulips” wording using letter stickers from Kaisercraft and also a pretty blue butterfly from an Ephemera Pack by Tim Holtz.

To finish, I added some shadow to the tulips with a Charcoal grey Derwent Inktense pencil and then emphasised the tulip petals using a black Uni Pin marker and white Uniball gel pen.

I hope that you are inspired to join our Anything Mixed Media Goes Challenge! For more inspiration please check out the amazing creations from my fellow Design Team members over at Creative Artiste too.

This year the tulips in our garden have been beautiful.

I love all the colours and structure that they have added to our flower border.

We plan to add more tulip bulbs every year; we planted these striped tulips a few years ago …

… and these gorgeous purple tulips are the ones that we planted in November last year (grin!).

Hoping that you all stay safe and keep well! x

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. A gorgeous page Jo, the tulips look beautiful and its a lovely background you created, just the sort I wish I could reach out to touch. Thank you for linking to the new theme at Art Journal Journey. The tulips in your garden look beautiful.

  2. This is such a beautiful bright picture to see today with the tulips standing proud and the colourful tiny hearts. How clever to add a little shadowing, that works really well.
Your “real” garden looks idyllic. There are so many different tulips and they are marvellous with the clouds of bluebells. I just love the brick wall, what a great thing to have in your garden.

    • Thank you Sheila! Yes I love the brick wall surrounding our garden, it’s one of the reasons that we changed the flower beds and got ride of the large shrubs as they covered up most of the wall 😀. Happy weekend! Stay safe and well! Hugs, Jo x

  3. Gorgeous page and even more beautiful is your garden. I love those parrot tulips. Sadly, the bunnies in my yard love tulip bulbs so of all the bulbs we have planted over the years only one or two tulips are left. I so enjoyed your garden with my morning cuppa.

  4. First I must say your spring garden looks amazing. Bulbs must really like it there. I love the tulips. When I plant them they grow one year and then no more, and I don’t know if that is a tulip trait or just my soil and the little chipmunks in the garden. (They might be a tasty treat to eat the bulbs) But I can see where you get your inspiration from to make your beautiful tulip page. Love it, and perfect for Mia’s challenge so thanks for linking up. Hugs-Erika

    • Thanks very much! Tulips don’t grow so well year on year with there flowers declining each year, but I think they should last more than one so I think those little pesky chipmunks might by to blame ….lol 😉. Take care! Hugs, Jo x

  5. Those tulips from the napkin are beautiful and you have incorporated them into your page seamlessly. You did a perfect job with using the grey shadow around them and the black and white pen work. The painted background is a perfect match and I love how you did those tiny hearts. It is a lovely page again Jo.
Gorgeous tulips in your garden, mine are almost finished now and funnily enough we had plans to plant more each year after a visit to Amsterdam and the flower market. Guess I can get them from here, most come from Holland anyway.

My tulips are all gone for the year, but yours are still blooming beautifully. Gorgeous garden shots.

  11. I adore your tulip page! It’s so fun reading how your pages come together, and I’m inspired to get my AJ out and start having fun. The white highlights and shading you added to the tulips is one of the details that make your pages come to life. I enjoyed seeing your garden as well. Gorgeous flowerbed; your talent extends from the page to the soil, my friend! Well done!
