See the Magic

Time for a new challenge over at Try it on Tuesday so for the next two weeks we are asking you to Have fun with stencils.

I had lots of fun with stencils to create this art journal page, can you see the magic (grin!).

I started by applying Ranger Texture Paste using a Tim Holtz Floral stencil around the right-hand side, top and left-hand side of the page and left it to dry. Then I applied some Bright Aqua Green, Magenta and Cadmium Yellow Liquitex acrylic paints over the whole page including the texture paste. Next I painted some white gesso to lighten the centre of the page so it looked like the sun is streaming through the flowers and foliage. Then I applied some of the Magenta paint using a brayer over the stencilled texture paste which gave a lovely effect highlighting different areas of the flowers with colour. I used the brayer again to apply some of the Magenta paint to some flower stamps from Gummiapan and Carabelle Studios, stamping them in the foreground; I made sure that I cleaned the stamps immediately so the paint didn’t dry on them. Then I splattered the page with some black DecoArt acrylic paint.

Next I stamped some tiny stars and the wording “See the magic” using a Paperbabes Stamps stamp set and black Archival Ink. I edged the page with a black Faber-Castell Big Brush marker and stamped a grid design from Sheena using the black Archival Ink. Then I added more detail to the flowers by painting them using the Magenta and black acrylic paints and adding highlights using a white Uniball gel pen which finished the page.

For more inspiration check out the amazing creations from my Design Teamies over at Try it on Tuesday who had fun with stencils too!

Some of you were asking if I had candles on the birthday cake that I made, as you can see I did – well just one candle (grin!).

As T Stands for Tuesday I’m sharing a piece of my birthday cake with my cuppa today! It was so yummy, if you missed it in my previous post it’s a homemade Victoria sponge cake filled with butter cream and cherry jam and topped with pink and white royal icing in a feathered design (double grin!) – Happy T day!

Stay safe and well! x

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

Challenges

I’m glad I found out about Challenge Blogs, like Try it on Tuesday, as I enjoy taking part, they provide me with inspiration for my pages and are a wonderful way to meet like-minded arty people. So here are the challenges I’m joining today:

  1. Your journal page is beautiful love all of the flowers and textures and the gorgeous colours. Magic is always good! Your cake has made me sad, because I haven’t got any cake here today, I’m sure it tasted good! Thanks, too, for linking to AJJ, much appreciated. Happy T day, hugs, Valerie

  3. I love your page Jo. It is happy and feels like spring is really in swing. And great technique to create it too. Thanks for linking it up to AJJ also. And I always go for 1 candle on my cake. It is smart. Afterall, you’re not suppose to ask a lady her age, right? Or at least that’s what my Mom says. But if you ask her she will tell you she’s 29 and has been 29 for decades. Smile. Happy T day. Stay safe my friend. Hugs-Erika

  5. What a beautiful journal page, Jo. The stencils you chose were lovely. I love the layering and the texture you created, too. I agree that it is truly magic. Thanks for sharing it with us at Art Journal Journey using Valerie’s theme, too. You are so supportive and we appreciate it.

I hope you made a wish that came true when you blew out the candle on your cake. I love how you decorated the cake with that icing. Subtle, but effective. I bet it went well with your tea, too, Jo. Thanks for sharing your incredible art, your cake, and your tea with us for T this Tuesday.

Your victoria sponge is also a masterpiece. Real buttercream is so yummy. I love how you did the icing with the feathered design. (I assume you made it yourself)

  10. Fabulous pages Jo, love the background and the pretty flowers but more than that I’m loving your birthday cake! looks delicious!. I’ve got cake deprivation as I can’t go out at all (in my 5th week now) and I haven’t baked for years but I’ve just got some flour and butter etc in my online order and I’m going to dust of the baking tins !

  11. I love a good Victoria Sponge and especially one with jam and buttercream inside it. Yours looks absolutely delicious and is making me long for a slice (or two). Cannot remember the last time I did feather icing either so that is taking me back and making me want that slice of cake more than ever.
Let’s leave the cake and go to your pages before I rush into the kitchen and get the scales out. They are beautiful! I love how you layered them up with the paste through the stencil and the paint on top. The brayering on the very top surface of the flowers looks particularly lovely. Jo, underneath the word “Magic’ (and in other places too but this one I can point out to you) you have stamped some cross hatching – I am assuming this is a stamp – if so do you know who makes it please? I love cross hatching and you have it so faintly on here which looks good that I would like to be able to do that myself rather than using my pen when it comes out much darker.

    • Thanks so much Neet! It was a fun page to make and the stamp is Sheena Douglas Create A Flower Rubber Stamp (Funky Textures 2 SD-CAFS-FT2). I bought this stamp set because of that particular stamp, I love it too 😁. Take care! Hugs, Jo x

  15. I can definitely see the magic – but then I can always see the magic of meadowflowers – this is a lovely page spread. And you’re another April birthday, are you? Mine’s coming up late next week – April birthdays are the best!!

  16. I love the colours and layers of wild flowers, the feeling of light flowing through the vegetation is there and it is a bit magical!
Totally support the 1 candle policy, it avoids advertising one’s real age (!) and is SO much cheaper past a certain age… The cake looks very appetising…

  17. I’m not going to trust myself thinking I wished you HB, so let me wish you again: Happiest of Birthdays to you! The cake does look delish, love that icing and wise to use just one candle, who wants all those poked holes afterward? {winkwink} XOX
