Beer Festival 2020 – Sweet Treats

Last week we volunteered again at our local annual Beer Festival, serving behind the bar and of course trying all the different beers. So I decided to re-cycle some of the hand pump clips on my page to capture three of my favourite beers of the festival; they are all dark beers and coincidentally, also link to sweet treats (grin!).

To depict the dark beers I started by covering the page with a Black Faber-Castell Big Brush marker by scribbling it onto the back diagonally and then using a wet paintbrush to disperse the ink a little. When dry I added a tiny amount of Dark Sepia Faber-Castell Big Brush marker and then some white acrylic paint using my finger to blend them into the background. For the beers, I pulled the stickers off the front of the hand pump clips and stuck them onto the page; I created some shadows around them so they stood out more by applying and smudging the Black Faber-Castell marker with my finger before sticking them down. The wording is torn out from the beer festival programme, edged with the black marker and stuck down using a glue stick. As I loved these beers I surrounded them with some small white hearts which were cut from some recycled white card using a Falling Hearts Thinlets set from Tim Holtz, which finished the page.

The first of these sweet treat beers is Tonkoko and tasted of coconut and chocolate like a Bounty chocolate bar . It is an Imperial Milk Stout brewed by Brew York Brewery in York, North Yorkshire. It was so smooth and creamy with a vanilla and Tonka bean finish. This was strong at 7.5% ABV (alcohol by volume) but so very easy to drink – yummy!

This Cinder Toffee Stout was from the New Bristol Brewery in Bristol and it had yummy toasted honeycomb taste, just like Crunchie Bars had been liquidised and added to a stout ! It’s a great session beer at 4% ABV; needless to say it sold out very quickly.

As T Stands for Tuesday, here’s my Stay Puft from the Tiny Rebel Brewery which is in Newport, Gwent, Wales. It is a marshmellow Porter and has a 5.2% ABV; it has the classic roasty qualities of a proper dark ale, whilst the marshmallow gives it a smooth sweetness, both combining for a yummy S’mores like taste – Happy T day!

Me and my hubby so enjoyed serving behind the bar and chatting to the customers, and we tried many of the 100 beers at the festival too – such fun!

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. OMGosh. I am a stout fan, so I KNOW you created this post with me in mind (OK, a bit of an exaggeration, but I still love only stout beer). I was so impressed with this page, and the hearts made it even more special. I like how you treated the background with those inks and how you shaded the various stickers from the hand pump clips. I am also impressed you were able to walk and talk after enjoying all that wonderful beer. I know it was a fun time for you and I thank you for sharing this FUN adventure with us at T this Tuesday AND for my theme at Art Journal Journey. Loved the photo of the two of you, too. You don’t look giddy, either!

  2. Ah, you must have been in your seventh (beer) heaven! The names sound lovely, too, but I don’t think I will give up my coffee just yet! Glad you had such a fun time, and the journal page you made to remember it by is such fun! Happy T day, hugs, Valerie

  3. The beer festival sounds brilliant but can’t imagine them with coconut etc although I’d like to try the cinder toffee one as I really love that. I must admit some beers have some great names nowadays
    Happy T Day

  4. I’m not a beer drinker, but these choices sound so intriguing. I love coconut and chocolate Mounds bars (the American version of your Bounty bar) The other flavors sound good to and I really love the beer stickers the illustrations are too fun. So glad you enjoyed the Beer Festival. Nice picture of you and your Hubby. Happy T Day!

  5. Oh you liked some yummy sounding brews. I love your page and reading about those beers. Here it seems that IPA’s are popular lately and getting a good dark beer isn’t easy. And how cool you have been to that restaurant from my post in Cornish. I have driven through Cornish several times but have never stopped there as it is a bit out of the way.It is a small world, isn’t it? Hope you’re having a lovely T day. Hugs-Erika

  7. I haven’t had beer in decades, I’ve never had ale, and I don’t even know what stout is lol But my son-in-law likes doing beer “flights” and tastings, so I know something about that kind of thing. It sounds like a fun event. Happy T Tuesday!

  8. This sounds like a very fun event, and you both look like you were having fun.
I like how you did your journal page from the event. I don’t know a lot about beer…..that seems to be our youngest son’s domain……….Bob and I sometimes do a beer tasting at BJ’s restaurant, I just know what I like there. LOL!
    Happy T-day

  9. What a great post! I love stout. And the beer that tastes like a crunchie bar has my attention. I wish I could taste that. I would let hubby taste it as well as he used to work for Cadbury’s when we lived in Bristol and they made Crunchie bars. Sweet memories…
Your page is great and the photo of you and your man is lovely.
    Happy T-Day,
    Hugs,

  10. Those beers sound delicious and I could easily think they could be found on a sweet shop shelf. It sunds like you must have had fun at the festival. Did you have a favourite drink after tasting a few of them?
Happy wishes Jo, it is a lovely photo of you and your hubby.

  11. I like how your art page features some of the beers. (Teddy said to tell you he loves the Tiny Rebel bear picture.) You had me at bounty bar: those are so good and I haven’t had one in a long time (because I haven’t seen them anywhere)! I almost didn’t notice the little hearts because I was so busy focusing on the larger images. It looks and sounds like you and your husband had a nice time serving at the annual festival. Happy T-Day!

  12. What a fun memory page. Candy flavored stouts – I’ve never heard of such a thing. I hardly ever drink beer, but I’d sure like to give some of those a try! I love the hearts scattered around the page.

    Happy T-day! Eileen xx

  13. That looks such fun and your faces say it all – you both had a super time by the look of it. I can just imaging someone here who would enjoy visiting your beer festival, I wonder if he would enjoy working it?
Love your page, what a brilliant idea to journal such a happy event and how good that you managed to get those hand pump clips. I had no idea they were portable like that. Maybe next time I know of a beer festival i should go along and see what I can find at the end of the night. Love the background you made and the little hearts really add to the story.
    Hugs, Neet xx
