12 Days of Christmas

Our new theme for the next two weeks at Try it on Tuesday is Inspired by a Song/Christmas Carol.

My page was inspired by the song ‘12 Days of Christmas’. I’m so excited to find out which song you have chosen to inspire your creations, please be sure to let us know.

I started by dividing the page into 12 equal sections; each sections is coloured and then stamped with a Sheet Music stamp using a different colour of Distress Ink; in numerical order the colours were Shabby Shutters, Festive Berries, Salty Ocean, Seedless Preserves, Fossilized Amber, Spiced Marmalade, Peacock Feathers, Mowed Lawn, Abandoned Coral, Picked Raspberry, Twisted Citron and Fired Brick. They are all edged using a Postage Stamp border stamp and black Archival Ink and then splattered with white gesso and black acrylic paint. I added the numbers which are die cut from black paper and stuck into place, like all of the paper elements, using a Zig Memory glue pen. Then I created a scene to depict each line of the song using some white mixed media paper to either stamp with black Archival Ink or die cut the different elements. The main characters are from a 12 Days of Christmas stamp set by Urban Stamps and for:

  1. A partridge in a pear tree – I fussy cut the partridge and three pears that I had stamped and arranged them on the page with a die cut branch from a Garden Greens Thinlet set by Tim Holtz which I edged using a black marker pen.
  2. Turtle Doves – I surrounded the dove with some hearts that were created using a paper punch.
  3. French Hens – The foreground was created using a circle die cut which I stamped with some French wording and the three snowflakes are die cut too.
  4. Calling Birds – The berry branch was from the Tim Holtz Garden Greens Thinlet set and the music notes were hand drawn and cut out.
  5. Gold Rings – I suspended the five gold rings using thin strips of paper and added some bows that were stamped from the 12 Days of Christmas stamp set and they were very fiddly to cut out (grin!).
  6. Geese a Laying – I stamped and cut out some extra eggs.
  7. Swans a Swimming – I added some extra waves and a circle die cut to depict the sun.
  8. Maids a Milking – The flowers were die cut using a Funky Florals Thinlet set from Tim Holtz.
  9. Ladies Dancing – I created the dance floor and little flowers using another Urban Arts stamp set.
  10. Lords a Leaping – The foreground and the snow fall were created using die cuts.
  11. Pipers Piping – I used the Sheet Music stamp again to depict the Piper’s music.
  12. Drummers Drumming – The tiered podium is created using a square die cut set and the stars are from the 12 Days of Christmas stamp set.

For more inspiration please pop over to Try it on Tuesday to see the amazing creations from my Design Teamies.

Do you know the song 12 Days of Christmas? It’s an English Christmas carol which has a simple verse structure that is modified with the progressive addition of Christmas gifts, so that each verse is longer than the verse before. It starts:

On the first day of Christmas
my true love sent to me:
A Partridge in a Pear Tree

On the second day of Christmas
my true love sent to me:
2 Turtle Doves
and a Partridge in a Pear Tree

… etc, etc

And ends:

On the twelfth day of Christmas
my true love sent to me:
12 Drummers Drumming
11 Pipers Piping
10 Lords a Leaping
9 Ladies Dancing
8 Maids a Milking
7 Swans a Swimming
6 Geese a Laying
5 Gold Rings
4 Calling Birds
3 French Hens
2 Turtle Doves
and a Partridge in a Pear Tree

Our local garden centre had a Christmas evening that I went along to with my sister and mum, we had a wonderful time and we all bought some Christmas gifts for family and friends.

The Christmas displays were so pretty and they even had live music which I really enjoyed (grin!).

They also treated us to a free mince pie and some mulled wine, so as T Stands for Tuesday I’m sharing this treat with you too – Happy T Day!

Sending Happy Thanksgiving wishes to those of you who celebrate this week too!

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. Lots of work, Jo and beautifully finished, as always. My mum, brothers and I used to sing this song together many a night and giggle at my baby brother’s rendition of Five Gold Rings – lovely memories. Gorgeous.

  2. Beautiful artwork: it captures the festive spirit and colors of Christmas. That garden center has great looking Christmas decor. And how fun that they served minced pie and mulled wine. The weeks leading up to Christmas are such a nice time of year. Happy T-Day!

  3. Wow Jo. That must have taken you days to complete. What a cool page! Great idea too. And I am still jealous of the gorgeous garden centers you have on that side of the pond. Love the little treats they serve up too. That has to put you in a holiday spirit. Hope you have a great week. And happy T day. Hugs-Erika

  4. Absolutely fantastic, a wonderful page Jo, it must have taken hours to create this.
I am remembering singing this with the children at school and the actions they mimed for each day. Thank you for the memories.
I would have liked to take a trip around that garden center as well.
After reading your post I feel the need to make some mince pies, I’ll pass on the mulled wine.
    Happy T day wishes Jo.

  5. Oh this is brilliant Jo and so amazing and clever how you found all the things to be able to create such a lovely page. Love that carol but always get confused with order of things after day 5 🙂
Hope all well with you at your end of the world.

  6. #7 is my favorite 🙂

I had mince pie once in my life, too! It was in Perth, in our Caravan Park.
Tennants threw a Christmas party, it was awesome.
They found each other after being torn apart as teenagers over 60 years later via Facebook and got married, such a sweet couple!
What pies can do, right 😉 Happy T-Day to you!

Hi Jo, your journal page is just wonderful-I love how you have designed it; No I did not know this song was base in England. the garden center looks so festive, and mulled wine perfect with the mince pie. I have not had that pie in forever. My Grandma that lived on the farm always made that from scratch-yum good memories

  8. A fabulous page Jo! Very festive! A nearby village has a decorating and lighting up of a Christmas tree on the green every year, then we go into the village hall for mulled wine and mince pies, and we do a rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas, with different tables doing each part. It’s such a fun evening! 🙂
Hope you’re having a good week,

  14. I love your page of the 12 Days of Christmas. You would think I would remember it after hearing it every year since I can remember but I always get stumped around day 7.
Your garden center always has the most beautiful displays. I particularly love those gnomes! And what adorable little minced pies they served.
    Happy Tea Day,

  15. A fabulous page Jo and I love how you’ve divided the page into sections displaying each day.
The garden centre looks lovely — I’m lying here in the sun in Dubai but planning Christmas in my mind – mince pies and mulled wine – can’t wait. Have a great week.

  16. A fabulous page Jo ,so much work gone into creating it. At a Christmas dinner I go to every year ,one of the group insists on singing the whole thing every time, drives us nuts!

  17. Oh what fun! I have fond memories of the 12 days of Christmas as in our family we used to sing it with actions. Hilarious! And now we are teaching the Spanish in our Intercambio group as they have never heard such a thing.
Your page is lovely. I love how you have depicted/cut out/die cut/drawn all the images. Well done.
I miss the garden centre’s displays. They don’t decorate much here, and the garden centre concentrates on plants. So it was nice to see some of what you saw. It’s all very beautiful.
    Happy T-Day (belated),
    Hugs,
    Lisca

  18. What can I say, other than I realize I’m very late visiting. I admit, I was just at Cath’s blog and gushed over her 3 Kings card. Then I came here and nearly fell over, something I definitely don’t want to do (grin). This is INSANE, Jo. It is out of this world incredible. I am SO in awe of this, it is unbelievable. I’ve been in three 12 Days of Christmas swaps and this showing all 12 days at a time is out of this world. I’m still gushing and amazed at this beauty. I almost forgot to thank you for sharing it with us at Art Journal Journey using Rike’s theme, because I was so overwhelmed with this incredible art.

I want to go with you to shop at the Garden Center. I want one of those tiny white tabletop trees. Of course, I would gladly take a mince pie, too. I really miss my grandmother making them every year at Christmas. I might even be persuaded to have a cup of mulled wine, too.

Thanks for sharing your incredible journal page, your trip to the garden center, the mince pies, and your mulled wine with us for T this Tuesday, which is now Wednesday.

  19. You’ve put so much time and thought into this Jo with all the attention going into each day with those characters. It’s nice how you went for the non tradition colours, it adds a great modern twist to the design. I must admit i’m struggling with this theme, thought and though last night during the coughing… I’m not sure anyone would welcome my song choices, a little too dark and growly for many haa haa!! So i’ll have to go down another route 😉
Sending Hugs your way this weekend, Take Care Tracey xx

  20. What a fabulous Christmassy post (almost enough to get me in the mood, though I generally refuse to interact with the C-word before December starts!). I love your 12 Days of Christmas – all those lovely colours and individual images – and the evening at the garden centre looks as though it was well worth the visit for getting in the festive spirit.
