Wish you were here

Our challenge for the next two weeks over at Try it on Tuesday is Wish you were here. Where will you take us? Maybe you would like to travel far away or even stay at home, the choice is yours!

For my art journal page, I decided to go to Venice and if you pop over to Try it on Tuesday you’ll find some more wonderful Wish you were here creations by my Design Teamies to inspire you too!

I had found one of the plastic bags from Venice had degraded into lots of pieces when I unpacked some holiday ornaments over Christmastime, so I decided to keep the pieces in my craft stash to use in my art journaling.

Being from Venice, I thought that they would be perfect for my “Venice wish you were here” inspired page, so I layered the bag pieces to form the background using Liquitex Matte gel medium. When the gel medium was dry, I flooded the page with watered-down Cracked Pistachio, Peeled Paint and Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink and left them to dry; I love the amazing texture that resulted.

Then I splattered the page with the both the Peeled Paint and Chipped Sapphire inks using a paint brush and added some diamond shapes using a stencil from Creative Expressions; first using the Peeled Paint ink again and then using some Black Soot Distress Ink. Using black Archival Ink I stamped the decorative shield design from Kaisercraft onto the page and also the “wish you were here” wording from Hampton Arts onto tissue paper; the wording is stuck onto the page using matte gel medium. Next I cut out a picture of Venice from a free travel advertising magazine, backed it with white paper, stuck it onto the page using double-sided tape and edged it with some black Glitterations border stickers.

I stuck a postage stamp to cover some writing on the magazine picture using double-sided foam tape; the postage stamp is from Romania showing a painting of Venice by N. Darascu, circa 1972.

Then I added three pieces of white and black striped ribbon to the page along with a postage stamp from Italy showing Coin of Syracuse, circa 1955; both of the postage stamps were kindly given to me to use for my art journaling by my hubby as part of his childhood Stamp Collection (grin!). To finish, I added some pretty diamante pieces using Ranger Glossy Accents to add some elegance and sparkle.

We have been to Venice a couple of times which is located in North Eastern Italy and is a series of islands that are separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges.

Of course Venice is well known for its Gondolas which we have been lucky enough to travel in.

We are always amazed by the beauty of the architecture along the Grand Canal and the only way to travel is by boat which appeals to me as I love being on the water (grin!).

As T Stands for Tuesday, I’m sharing our Aperol Spritz which is a very popular drink in Italy along with some traditional cuisine from Venice. Aperol Spritz is an aperitif cocktail consisting of prosecco, Aperol and soda water; it originated in Italy and is now available worldwide. Our drinks are pictured with some cicchetti which are small snacks or side dishes that originated and are typically served in traditional “bàcari” (cicchetti bars) in Venice. Cheers and Happy T Day!

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. Fantastic page Jo, Venice is really a great place to visit, I loved the few months I spent there, even though I was working! Your food and drinks look great, too. I always have Aperol in my fridge in case I get visitors….Hope you are feeling better, and that your injuries soon heal. Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie

Love the stamp and the background.. And what patience you must have to glue pieces of that degraded bad onto your page..last bag I found like that went to almost dust.

  4. I’ve never been to Italy. Venice would be a fantastic destination as we don’t have any city like that here in the States. Your page captures the essence of Venice. That food looks amazing

  5. This is a fabulous spread Jo. The bits of the plastic bag are a really cool addition to the page and add some fun details. I’ve been thinking about a visit to Venice (before it sinks) and I think you may have inspired me. You can never go wrong with Italy, especially, as you said, if you can get on the water. Happy T day and hope your recovery is going well. You have been through a lot lately. Hugs-Erika

  6. I’m so sorry my blog post was an empty space. I don’t know what happened there. I do apologise. I have now re-posted the whole thing and I hope it’s OK now.
What a beautiful page about Venice. Fancy using a disintegrated bag! That is so creative. I wouldn’t have thought of that.
The pictures of your holiday in Venice are beautiful. I have lived in Italy for more than 15 years and i have to confess I have never been to Venice!
The chicchetti are like the Spanish tapas I imagine. They look really yummy, as does the Aperol spritzer. The chicchetti must be typical Venetian as i have never encountered them in other parts of Italy. But there are ‘antipasti’ of course, which is a similar thing.
    Wishing you a happy T-Day,
    Hugs,
    Lisca

  7. A really romantic destination Jo. Its a fantastic page with wonderful details, you are very patient sorting through and using things that maybe seen as unusable by some. Not to us crafters though.
Look after yourself and have a Happy T day.

  8. Oh Jo, I can see this being another great fortnight at TioT. Your beautiful entry has piqued my interest and sparked my imagination. I especially like the way you treated the focal image. The way you outlined it was genius. Also, it’s a great entry for Gill’s theme at Art Journal Journey, and we appreciate your support.

What a great way to join in for T Tuesday. Although I’d never heard of a Aperol Spritz, it looks appealing. And your cicchetti have definitely made me hungry. Thanks for sharing your Aperol Spritz and your beautiful art with us for T this Tuesday, dear Jo.

  9. I was sorry to hear about your accident and the two shiners, Jo. Boy that sounds painful and disabling. I’m healing from an accident 3 weeks ago. I tripped on a tree root in the middle of the sidewalk and fell on the right side of my face, right on the orbital bone. Boy, did I have a shiner; but it didn’t affect my vision. I hope your swelling goes down quickly.

I was surprised to read that you’re from Venice. Europeans seem so mobile and well-traveled. I wonder if you speak Italian. Love your Venice page.

    Happy T-day! Hugs, Eileen

I have only visited Venice for a day – when the Aqua Alta was at record high levels and there were waves on the on the Grand Canal! I had my first and last Gondola ride!!! I love how you covered the writing on the image!! I hope you are recovering well and the pain is subsiding ! Your Chichetti look good as do those refreshing drinks! Hugs, Chrisx

  15. Using a plastic bag which had come to bits is genius, especially when it is as special as this one was, and the background effect is marvellous too (and again the names of the paints are so unusual and attractive). Lovely stamp and diamante too. How kind of hubby to “donate” his stamps to the art journal cause. You’ve made a tremendous page.
I also enjoyed the photos of Venice.
