Everything has beauty

I hope you had a lovely Easter weekend; here in the UK we have a four-day holiday for Easter and we have had some glorious weather, so we’ve been spending time visiting with friends, in the garden and out on our tandem (grin!).

As part of our ongoing garden project, this week we started landscaping the back beds of our garden so my page today reflects nature and earthy colour tones as I took inspiration from all the dirt we have been shovelling (grin!) along with the brick wall colours that we have been exposing and the birds that we have seen in our garden too – I hope you like it!

For my grungy background, I started by covering the page with Chestnut, Boulder, Dessert, Fawn and Topaz Spectrum Aqua markers by scribbling each of the inks onto a blending mat, spritzing with water and pressing the mat onto the page. Then I stencilled a Vintage Diamond stencil from Creative Expressions and Black Soot Distress Ink and added some pieces of decoupage paper using Liquitex matte gel medium. I used a palette knife to add some Pébéo white gesso over the page and once dry, I edged the decoupage pieces using a Dark Sepia Faber-Castell Big Brush marker smudging the ink with my finger. Then I stamped a Script stamp from Kaisercraft and also a grid patterned homemade stamp using black Archival Ink. I splattered the page with the Dark Sepia Faber-Castell Big Brush Marker ink by scribbling it onto an acrylic block, spritzing with water and dripping it onto the page. Then I used black Archival Ink to stamp the bird on the branch which is part of the Urban Tapestries stamp set from Tim Holtz and also the flowers in the foreground which is from a Carabelle Studio stamp set. To finish, I added two Small talk stickers from Tim Holtz and edged them using a black Uni Pin marker; they read “live gently on the earth” and “everything has beauty”.

I had a cuppa with friends at Bijou of Lytham last week, it’s a pretty place and I had a wonderful time catching up with some friends – here’s my pot of drinking green tea …

… and my friend’s hot chocolate with all the works (marshmallows and cream) – as T Stands for Tuesday I’m wishing the T Gang a very Happy T Day!

  1. I love that idea of being inspired by dirt for a page. I have been raking and mine would be brown leaves. Smiles. This is a gorgeous page. I thought it was bit like autumn until I read about the dirt. Perfect Jo! Glad you had a happy Easter and some nice weather. And that hot coco is really over the top. But looks good. Have a wonderful T day. Hugs-Erika

  3. I like your inspiration 🙂 and the art that came from it -the background and the quote and that lovely little bird 🙂 I like it when restaurants have teapots, and that one has great lines and goes so nicely with the cup. Happy T Tuesday!

  4. Lovely neutral page, Jo. That’s quite a switch for you. You’re so versatile in your art.

To answer your question about the watercolor brush pens I used for the stationery they are MozArt watercolor brush pens, my new fave. IMO they’re better brushes and better value than Tombows. On the Earth Day spread, I followed a tip from you and used used Gansai Tambi pan watercolors 😉

    Happy T-day! Eileen xx

  6. I’m sorry for being so late visiting. After being out all day, I came home, expecting to get on the internet and leave comments. However, what happened was I fell asleep and just woke a short time ago. The boys were quite needy and I laid down with them just for a second. That turned into at least five hours. Now I’m playing catch up.

“Live gently on this earth” should be good advice for Earth Day, too. This is a gorgeous entry. I can relate to the dirt. I don’t have any work gloves, so got lots of it under my nails on Saturday. I love how the colors match your bricks and dirt. It’s a true gem. Of course, I also was thrilled you chose to share it with us using Wendy’s theme at Art Journal Journey, too.

Now I’m really, really hungry for that incredibly decadent hot chocolate. It’s amazing. Thanks for sharing your art, your tea, and your friends incredible chocolate delight with us for T this Tuesday, dear Jo.

  7. This is really lovely with the earth colours. The colours you used have these marvellous earthy names too. The way you’ve added the dark of the bird and the grasses, the spatters and the paper pieces all give such a marvellous wall and earth effect.
I’ve never used a blending mat, but will look out for one, that’s a clever technique to make a background start.

  8. I really love the colours on your page, very subtle. It’s a fabulous page, I have been away on a two day workshop with Dyan Reavely and am tired out. Did pull some weeds up this afternoon though, my conscience got the better of me. Thank you for sharing with us on Art Journal Journey.

  9. Love your neutral colour scheme, Jo – the stamped flowers are so pretty and create a wishy washy, dreamy effect. I love that bird on a branch but always forget that stamp for some reason…I must give it a workout soon 😉
Happy week with lots of creative inspiration!

  10. How appropriate for Earth Day that you should have an earth inspired project. and of course I mean earth as is the ground. Lovely earthy colours. I love it.
And I nearly fainted seeing your friend’s hot chocolate. (drool, drool)
    Happy belated T-Day,
    Lisca

  11. Had to come back to this to mention one of my favourite quotes, which sprang to mind again when I saw the title of this blog entry again…
It’s from Gauguin and it says, ‘Meme le laid est beau…’ – ~Even the ugly things are beautiful. I think it’s SO true – everything is beautiful in some way, however hard it may be to find it in some things…
    Have a great weekend 🙂

  12. Your journal page is just so beautiful Jo, I love the neutral tones in the background which gives a wonderful boldness to the stamping. The decoupage elements add some wonderful texture too. A truly lovely page!

Apologies for the lateness but thank you so much for joining in our Neutral Zone challenge at A Vintage Journey. Anne x
