Beatrix Potter

Our new challenge theme over at Try it on Tuesday for the next two weeks is Childhood, so I created a page to remember my favourite childhood stories and author, Beatrix Potter.

You’ll find some beautiful inspiration from the Design Team over at Try it on Tuesday too, I hope you will join us!

I started by experimenting with Colourcraft Brushos and making a spray using Dark Brown Brusho powder and water which I mixed in a spritzer bottle. I sprayed it over the page and left it to dry, it gave a lovely pinkish egg-shell colour, which I thought tied in nicely with the Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck. But then I remembered that duck eggs are white! (grin). Then I fussy cut a black and white picture of Beatrix Potter, a colour picture of Hill Top Farm in the Lake District where she lived, her illustration of “Cecily Parsley Makes Cowslip Wine” and some text from an old 2016 magazine article celebrating her 150th Birthday. I also fussy cut a picture of peas and a picture of the Lake District from the same magazine and I cut The Tale of Peter Rabbit book and my favourite characters from a leaflet, this included: Peter Rabbit; Peter Rabbit being chased by Farmer McGregor; Peter Rabbit jumping into a watering can; Peter Rabbit running on all fours; Appley Dapply; Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle; The Tailor of Gloucester; Mr. Jeremy Fisher; and Jemima Puddle-Duck. I collaged all the fussy cut pieces onto the page using a UHU Stic and when the glue was dry I outlined some of the pieces using a black Uni Pin marker. To finish, I added two pieces of blue ribbon and then stuck a recycled blue button where the ribbons overlapped using Glossy Accents and a pretty blue polka dot flower.

From my page, have you guessed who my all time favourite character was – it was Peter Rabbit! As a child I loved the Beatrix Potter stories and still have many of her books in my craft room which I have been known to sit and read now and then with a cup of tea (grin!). In the front of these books you will see my egg cup from my childhood too, it features Peter Rabbit and I have fond memories of dipping my soldiers (thin strips of toast) into my runny egg yolk (double grin!).

We used to holiday in the Lake District every year when I was a child and I have many happy memories of visiting Hill Top Farm too so I was pleased to include this on my page.

As T Stands for Tuesday, I’m sharing my cup of green tea and a homemade Belgian Bun – Happy T Day!

This was the first time that we have made these buns and they tasted delicious. They are not to be confused with Chelsea Buns that I used to make when I was younger, as they have Lemon Curd filling rather than butter so have less fat content – yay!

Also if you are visiting from the T Gang and like Street Art then you may wish to check out my previous post here.

Challenges

As well as Try it on Tuesday, I’m pleased to join the following challenges:

I’m pleased to join the lovely Yvonne from Meggy’s way, who is hosting A World of Fantasy challenge over at Art Journal Journey with my Beatrix Potter page as she definitely created fantastical animals for her stories.

I’m joining in the fun over at Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge and their Anything Goes challenge with my art journal page.

Over at That’s Crafty! Challenge Blog their theme is Animal Magic so I’m pleased to join this challenge with Beatrix Potter’s magical animals that I included on my page.

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

Here is a list of all the materials used to create this art journal page:

  • Colourcraft Brusho (Dark Brown)
  • Uni Pin Fine Line marker (Black 0.3mm)
  • Old Magazine
  • Beatrix Potter Leaflet
  • Blue Adhesive Ribbon

  3. A precious page. I had an anthology storybook when I was a child. Peter Rabbit was in the collection and printed on beautiful glossy pages. I loved those pages. Your egg cup is adorable. I haven’t had a soft boiled egg with toast in ages. Wow! on your Belgian buns. You need to open up a bakery! Happy T Day

  8. I also am a huge Beatrix Potter fan. Love your page and the photo of all your books. There are some I don’t have. Now I will have to be on the look out for them! I am curious, have you seen the Beatrix Potter movie. It is so good; I only recently saw it and now have watched it twice! It is from 2006! 12 years ago and I only just seen it! Miss Potter with Renée Zellweger. Excellent! Thank you for sharing your lovely page. Happy Tea Day.

    • Thanks so much! Yes I bought the movie Miss Potter as soon as it came out on DVD and love it too 😁. It is excellent, isn’t it! The animation of the characters is so wonderful and her story is a mixture of sadness and happiness. Wishing you a very Happy Tea Day too! J 😊 x

  9. Oh Jo! What a fabulous page and such memories too! I used to love Mrs Tiggywinkle (probably because we had hedgehogs in the garden) We first went to Hill Top when the grandchildren were little – but have been back on our own since! Those buns look delicious!

  10. Somehow I feel like SUCH an outsider. I have never read a book by Beatrix Potter, nor Peter Rabbit. So this was like reading a foreign language to me. What first impressed me was the background, then the way you mixed realistic images with the adorable fairytale animals that jumped around, hid behind, and stood or ran in front of the realist images. It was a wonderful show to behold and I am thrilled you also shared it with us at Art Journal Journey.

Your egg cup is wonderful. I can just imagine swirling your soldiers in the perfectly poached egg sitting in the cup. That sounds as delicious to me as the beautiful buns you made to go with your green tea. Thanks for baking for us and sharing these and your tea for T this Tuesday.

    • Thanks so much! No worries, I don’t think you could grow up near and holiday in the Lake District without knowing about Beatrix Potter, she is quite a legend not only for her stories but for saving the landscape in the Lake District for all to enjoy 😁. Wishing you a very Happy T Tuesday! J 😊 x

  11. Hello Jo.
I always love your little “lessons” and now I know the difference between Chelsea Buns and Belgian Buns. I also love that cup of green tea and I am going to make one right after this.
Beatrix Potter was marvellous as is your tribute and I’m very impressed that you have all these books. Your artwork is so happy and your fussy cutting is legendary (!).

  12. A lovely story of Beatrix Potter and lucky you having all those books. I have a ceramic Jeremy Fisher and a Mrs Tiggiwinkle that my late sister made for me, very precious to me. Those buns look delicious and I’m feeling a bit peckish right now but its a boring jam tart right now for me !

  13. Jo, I’m really impressed with your collection of Peter Rabbit books and your cup. The books look pristine – what a fabulous collection! Love your journal page of Beatrix Potter illustrations.

Your “soldiers” dipped in egg yolk remind me of a childhood favorite, egg-in-a-hole. Very similar.

May I have one of those homemade Belgian buns please?

    Happy T-day! Hugs, Eileen

  14. I love the inspiration for your journal page today, Jo! I love Beatrix Potter as well. What a fabulous imagination she had. Did you ever see the movie Miss Potter? I loved seeing a peak into her life and inspiration. I am not sure how accurate it was seeing as it is a movie but I am sure some of it was real. So wonderful that you still have all of her books and that adorable mug. I still have my volume of her stories that was given to me as a little girl.
    Happy Tea Day,
    Kate

    • Thanks very much Kate 😁. Yes I have seen Miss.Potter, it’s a great movie and having read some of her journal there is some embellishment like when she met William Heelis and also some truth to the story like her love for Norman Warne, their engagement, her parents disapproval and his death shortly after he proposed – so sad! Happy Tea Day! J 😊 x

  15. Hello Jo,

I love your post! Last week I finished my photo album about my holiday from las year. My daughter and I went to the Lake District for 4 days and Hill Top was favorite! I have send you the album pages about Beatrix Potter. Do you remember she had the trash bin and other trash hidden behind a ‘wall’ of flowers. I bought a very cheap little book about Peter Rabbit in a secondhand store in Keswick and used the pictures and some text as you can see. Hope you like it 😊 Have a nice week Jo! Hugs from Lenie

  17. I love Peter Rabbit! I remember him from my childhood (I never had the plates etc) and I used to read them to my son when he was small. and he does have the crockery.
You turned it into a lovely page for your art journal.
Thank you for mentioning the street art. I would have missed it.
I like the look of the Belgian bun. I love lemon curd so this appeals to me. I will look up the recipe and try to make them one day. I’d better go and have supper. You have made me hungry.
Sorry I am late in commenting. (Better late than never), but we are rather busy packing and getting everything ready for our road trip.

  19. Awwww Jo what a lovely childhood memory one to carry for ever more, I often think the illustrations within these books are what inspired me on my creative journey. I secretly wanted to become an illustrator of books. Love how your page tells a story just how the tradition of journaling first started. Thank you so much for sharing.
Those buns look delicious, I could just do with one of those with my elevenses :))
Hugs for the weekend Tracey xx
