Earth’s Music

Today I was inspired by nature and my lovely friend Alison from Craftytrog’s Arty Adventures who is undertaking a challenge to create 5 minute journal pages – thank you!

I wanted to use some leftover papers and paints in my craft area so with the drying time of paints and glues and my finishing touches, I cannot claim this is a 5 minute page – my time actually ran out after the stencilling (grin!).  I had so much fun though and it is one of the simplest and quickest pages I have created which makes me happy – see what you think!

For the background I added some leftover book papers that were on my craft desk, it’s from some old books and some of it was die cut from a previous project. I used a UHU Stic to stick it onto the page and then I stamped some clocks from Kaisercraft using black Archival Ink. Next I used Cadmium Yellow and Cadmium Red Liquitex acrylic paints and also white and black DecoArt arcylic paints to colour the background; some of which were already in my paint palette. I mixed the paints to create a pale yellow and also an orange colour and applied them to the page using a baby wipe concentrating the yellow near the centre of the page and the orange around the edges. I used up any leftover paint by applying it through a trellis stencil by Creative Expressions with a sponge and then. I die cut some flowers from sheet music using Sizzix Wildflower Thinlets by Tim Holtz and my Big Shot Machine. When the paint was dry I stamped a crackle stamp by BoBunny around the edges of the page using black Archival Ink. I stuck the sheet music flowers in place using Liquitex matte gel medium and once the gel medium was dry, I outlined them with a black Uni Pin marker.  To finish, I added a quote by George Santayana using Letter Labels by Tim Holtz which I thought matched the sheet music flower beautifully, it reads “The earth has music for those who listen”.

I love nature and when I die cut some of the Thinlet wildflowers for this page they reminded me of some of the flowers in my new garden border. This included the Achillea and Rudbeckia

… and also the poppies; we have quite a few this year and the seed flower heads provide some lovely structure to the border too.

Challenges

I’m glad I found out about Challenge Blogs as I enjoy taking part, they provide me with inspiration for my pages and are a wonderful way to meet like-minded arty people. So here are the challenges I’m joining today:

I’m pleased to join the lovely Bleubeard & Elizabeth at Altered Book Lover, who is hosting the Count your blessings challenge over at Art Journal Journey as nature makes me happy and when I look at my garden I feel blessed.

As I enjoyed using the stamps as part of my design, I’m joining the Anything Goes Challenge over at The Artistic Stamper with my art journal page.

I’m joining the Wild Thing challenge over at Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge with the wildflowers dies that I added to my art journal page.

Over at Moo Mania and More the theme is Sheet Music so I’m pleased to join their challenge too.

I’m also joining in the fun over at Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge and their Make your own Background challenge with the layered book pages, stamping, paint and stencilling that I used to create my background for this art journal page.

I’m also pleased to join the July Link Party #41 over at Cropstop Blog with my art journal page as I included some products from companies that they carry in their store.

Over at Try it on Tuesday the theme is Use Book Paper and there is a few days left to join in the fun, I hope to see you there!

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. I agree that allowing paints and glue to dry takes longer than five minutes, but this is a powerful and fabulous five minute entry, Jo. You made a masterpiece. I think it is wonderful that you shared your garden blessing with us at Art Journal Journey, too.

I tried to use a clear stamp yesterday and couldn’t get it off the backing sheet. I was really impressed with that large clock and how you used it. I wish I understood the secret of those clear stamps, but they really HATE me (grin).

I love the view of your garden. I love the poppy seed heads. They have such a great structure and are miniature statues in my opinion. It’s a joy to see your garden area and I love the photos you shared.

  3. This is simply a masterpiece – I adore the subtile layering of colours and marks and those sheet music flowers are simply adorable to it – add the neede white and black to bring all the wonderful summery colours of the background into highlight! Simply amazing and you made me so happy to link this amazing piece to AJJ and also to Moo Mania & More! So much appreciated!
Happy weekend dear Jo! We are just so happy – we got the results at the Vet today that this cancer was a bening tumor. That are really good news.

  4. This is a fabulous page Jo . I love the hot colours and am amazed that you did it so quickly. I think time to dry paint and glues does take a while. I often go back to a page far to quickly and its still tacky to the touch.
Its a wonderful quote to go with the page and I must try die cutting some lowers using book paper, yours look lovely.
    Have a good weekend Jo.

    • Thanks very much! It was a simple page for me just book papers and stamping, paint and stencilling, stamping and die cuts, and then the quote. I also tried to use techniques that were quick like applying paint with a baby wipe rather than a paintbrush, it goes on much quicker…lol 😉. I know what you mean, I have ruined quite a few pens with tacky glue due to going back to the page too early. Have a good weekend! J 😊 x

  5. A fabulous page Jo, the contrast between the lovely background and the music paper flowers, really makes it all pop! Wonderful spread!

We just arrived in France with a normal internet connection, so I finally am getting round to visiting.
    Have a lovely weekend, – it’s roasting here….

    • Thank you! I’m not as quick as you are, my five minutes ran out after the stencilling which turned out a bit messy both on the page and also on my fingers …lol … I wasn’t worried though as I just wanted to have fun …lol 😉. I hope you are having a wonderful weekend too! J 😊 x

  6. Gorgeous page Jo. I can’t believe you made that in a short period of time-minus drying of course. You got some fantastic layering and I like how you die cut those flower silhouettes from the sheets of music. I like your rusty metal frog. I have a couple of cats and a dog that are similar in that style. ANd gardens are great inspirations for sure. Happy weekend. Hugs-Erika

  8. Jo this has so much warmth in colour just like the weather we are experiencing, I do not think it matters in the slightest that you went over the time limits as you enjoyed yourself so much when creating it and we all know that time does fly when we are having fun. Your pages flow so beautifully with those background book pages & die cuts, a very pretty creation indeed.
Hugs & sorry i’m so late, not been online for a couple of days.
    Big Hugs Tracey xx
