I want to sing …

With the glorious sunny weather we’ve been having of late, nature seems to be blooming with spring happiness, so today my page celebrates the beautiful magnolia trees, birds and birdsong!

I’m linking to the Flora and Fauna theme over at Art Journal Journey which I’m hosting this month too.

I started by scribbling some Metallic Blueberry Faber-Castell Gelato onto the page in horizontal lines and then I spritzed the page with water, and used my finger to smudge and blend the colour across the page. Next I ripped a magnolia design napkin and stuck the flowers onto the page using Liquitex matte gel medium. Once the gel medium was dry, I doodled an outline on the flowers with a black Derwent Graphik marker. Then to depict birdsong, I stamped some music notes and script stamps from the Musicality Docrafts stamp set over the background using black Archival Ink . I applied some Pébéo white gesso with my finger over some of the stamped images and then used the same stamp set and black ink again to add another layer of stamping which gave the page more depth. The bird image is fussy cut from an old calendar, edged with Dark Sepia Faber-Castell Big Brush marker and stuck onto one of the magnolia branches using a UHU Stic. I also cut two of the magnolia leaves from the napkin and arranged them in front the bird so he blended into the scene better. To make the bird look like he was singing, I arranged some pieces of musical washi tape to flow upwards from his open beak. I placed three of these musical notes on the page background too and covered them all with Liquitex matte gel medium to hold them firmly in place. When the gel medium was dry, I edged them with a black Derwent Graphik marker so they stood out more. I added the quote using some Docrafts letter stickers  and I edged with white Uniball gel pen to soften the edges. I stamped the author’s name under the quote using an alphabet stamp set and black Archival Ink which finished the page; the quote is by Rumi and reads:

“I want to sing like the birds sing, not worrying about who hears or what they think”.

Walking into town we pass many gardens filled with beautiful spring blossoms and these are some pretty magnolias that are flowering not far from our house.

Challenges

I’m glad I found out about Challenge Blogs, Art Journal Journey, as I enjoy taking part, they provide me with inspiration for my pages and are a wonderful way to meet like-minded arty people. So here are the challenges I’m joining today:

Being inspired by the Words and Music theme over at A Vintage Journey, I’m pleased to join the lovely Astrid and the rest of the Creative Guides with my Mixed Media Style music related art journal page.

Over at Moo Mania and More the theme is Even More Flowers so I’m pleased to join in the fun with my magnolia inspired page.

I’m also joining the Allsorts Challenge Blog and their In the Pink challenge with the pretty pink magnolias that I included on my page.

I’m also pleased to join Mixed Media World where their theme is Anything Goes…optional Pink.

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. I am thrilled about this beautiful page again – you have such a hand and eye for all the little touches that are needed to make a page into a piece of art! And a Rumi quote again. I love them all, they just give the best advices for getting happy in life and this one is such a good advice for everybody, to be just oneself. So difficult for the most people today as we get so much input of how to live and how to look and how to act…..! You took your wonderful inspiration of this gorgeous magnolia and turned it into a wonderful artsy page! WOW! One of our neighbours here has a wonderful magnolia tree in his gareden as well – I always love to see it blooming. Each bloom is a piece of art!
I hope you still have that amazing weather – here it got very cold again and is raining cats and dogs, so hopefully I get some art done- we will see- the house speaks loud to me as well needing a bit of cleaning and love from me !
Happy day dear Jo! A wonderful entry for your popular theme! You are a great host and inspiration for the artists this month! Thank you for all your support and great to see you also linking to AVJ and MM&M. You made me happy to link to Moo Mania & More! ♥♥♥ You know this!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the work you do for the different challenges!
    So much appreciated!
    Hugs, Susi

    • Thanks so much my friend! I love this Rumi quote and being oneself is a good way to live your life, of course this quote also made me smile about our conversation last weekend and my crazy singing …lol 😉. We still have lovely weather here and only got rain overnight which is perfect …lol 😉 … we now have sunshine which makes me very happy! We have been out to get our summer plants for our garden today, which was fun, so as we have more good weather forecast for the weekend I will be busy planting them all up. Thanks again and wishing you a happy rest of the week! J 😊 x

    • Thanks very much Erika! I’ve had the magnolia napkin in my stash for a while, the flowers always looked so big so I hadn’t used it …lol 😉. With the magnolias in full bloom and looking so beautiful this year I knew I just had to use it 😉. We are having wonderful weather here too with more forecast for the weekend. Have fun! J 😊 x

  3. Those are wonderful words to go with your musical spread. I love the shimmering blue background and those fabulous florals, and the lovely detailed touches like the musical notes flying out of the bird’s mouth – a great page. Thanks so much for joining us on A Vintage Journey this month.

  4. This is a gorgeous page Jo. The birds were singing here early this morning, not fun at about 5 a.m. I love the pretty napkin you used and the wonderful singing bird. I am smiling as I read you smudged the paint with your fingers, it is something I often do myself.
The magnolia blossom photos are beautiful as well.

  5. The magnolia flowers are beautiful against the musical background, and I can almost hear the song coming from the bird! That’s a great quote! We should all worry less about what other people think and do what makes us happy. Lovely page!

  6. Such a pretty page. I like the way the musical notes seem come from the bird’s open beak. My neighbor, Prissy, had a magnolia tree. Just as it would bloom during the first 2 weeks of May, we would get a heavy rain storm and all the blossoms would just fall to the ground. One winter was harsh and the tree split in the middle, and had to be taken down.

  7. Once again, I am totally blown away by your journal page. You have SO MUCH attention to detail and those magnolias really got to me when I learned this was a napkin. I guess I should use gel medium, rather than UHU glue sticks with my napkins because I don’t get mine to melt into the page like you do. You can never ever go wrong with a Rumi quote, either.

I couldn’t believe you cut pieces of washi tape for the musical notes. You are a genius who thinks outside the box. Clever, clever you. Thanks for sharing this at Art Journal Journey and thanks again for being such a great host there this month, too.

    • Thanks a lot! I’m always really careful with the gel medium as the napkin can tear easily as it is wetter than a UHU Stic, which has been quite frustrating at times …lol 😁. Have a great day! J 😊 x

  8. This is a really wonderful page of these beautiful magnolias, the perfect quote and the best fitting background! I especially love this singing bird because a sheet music comes exactly out of its mouth 🙂
Wish you a happy weekend, dear Jo!

      • We are blessed with Magnolias here. There’s a magnolia trail at the Botanic Garden, which is located in Audubon Park right here is east Memphis. I haven’t been there since my fall and really need to go while the magnolias are in bloom. I missed the azaleas completely.
