Notarianni Ice Cream

We always enjoy visiting our favourite ice cream shop, Notarianni’s, for a takeaway tub of ice cream! With birthday celebrations it means that we have an extra special treat of visiting their Ice Cream Parlour for a sundae, so I created a page to celebrate our recent visit and later in the post you can even check out which yummy sundae we had too (grin!).

I started by covering the page with white napkins that I recycled from the Ice Cream parlour that we visited. I layered the napkins using Liquitex matte gel medium to cover the background quite thickly to create texture. Once the gel medium was dry I painted it with Parchment Liquitex acrylic paint and Pébéo white gesso. As both the paint and gesso were high density I scraped a palette knife over the top to give a smoother finish so it looked like the silky texture of the vanilla ice cream we had. Next I added some gold lacy borders on the left-hand and right-hand sides of the page and arranged some gold circles diagonally across the page, all of which are outline stickers. The green and white stripes are washi tape which I used to cover the edges of the page alongside the lacy borders, to back some of the small circles, and also to create a counter for the ice cream and bottle image to sit on which is edged with some of the gold lace border too. All of the images are fussy cut from a free leaflet from the parlour and depict the Notarianni Ice Cream history through the generations. I always enjoy reading and finding out more about the places and I often hope to recycle this sort of leaflet on my pages. I backed the images onto some white card that I recycled from some clothes packaging and stuck them over the gold circles using glue dots.

The waitress at the Ice Cream Parlour also kindly gave me some Notarianni Ice Cream stickers too, so I mounted them behind some of the gold circles, cut them to shape and added them to my collage. To finish, I used outline letter stickers to add “1928” and for the wording which is their strap-line and always makes me smile, it reads:

“You can have any flavour you like as long as its vanilla!”

Notarianni Ice Cream has a long history and dates back to 1928, as you may have guessed from the name they make Italian Ice Cream and keeping to their family tradition they sell one flavour only which is vanilla. There are a variety of ways to enjoy the ice cream, on a cone, tub, sundae, floats or milkshake and there are so many toppings to chose – sprinkles, nuts, honeycomb, sherbet, chocolate flake, toffee, chocolate or raspberry sauce. If you are interested, here’s the link to Notarianni’s website and menu. It is now run by the third and fourth generations of the family and they have a loyal following from locals and tourists who, like us, return again and again.

They close over winter and on visiting the ice cream parlour we found that it has been remodelled with a super new counter.

This time we chose a Banoffee Sundae which has slices of banana and toffee sauce served with two scoops of vanilla ice cream and is topped with whipped cream, and we also had a chocolate milkshake served in one of their cool milk bottles (grin!).

I’m sure that we will be visiting again soon (double grin!).

  1. I thought the you can have any flavor you want as long as it’s vanilla was a joke! 😀 I’m not a big fan of ice cream, though I do enjoy it when the weather is really hot. But gelato. That’s a whole other ball game. Your page certainly captured the spirit of the ice cream parlor.. Looks like there was a long long and obviously worth the wait by the look of your sundae. So, when you brought a tub of ice cream home, what flavor did you get? =^,.^=

  2. I’m drooling here Jo! That sundae looks amazing! I love the milk bottle shake too! And, of course, I love your page, the texture from the napkins, and all that wonderful memorabilia!
Hope you have a wonderful weekend,

  3. I thought their slogan is a joke.. but they are just clever with having only vanilla and give the possibility to create with toppings. I love what mostly here is called “Heisse Liebe”-HOT LOVE and enjoy it often at home- Vanilla ice cream with hot rasperries. That’s one of my summer hits or vanilla ice cream with egg liqueur , and do you know what? I will go down in the basement where my freezer is now and treat myself with exactly a mix of both flavours – I will take Vanilla ice cream with hot rasperries and top it with egg liqueur —I am just as clever as the Notariannis are …lol. Not just do I love this amazing page with all it’s fantastic recycling and wow.. it don’t look so BEAUTIFUL and fun and well designed and nobody would think of recycling! That is “top of the line Recycling ” in my eyes Jo!- I also love the lovely picture of you! This ice parlour looks very nice and a fantastic place to go. And I can see how popular it is!
I am more than happy about the inspiration for my afternoon treat now and about this beautiful post and page linked to Art Journal Journey!
Wishing you a very happy weekend my friend!

  4. Amazing there is only vanilla, and it’s so popular a place to visit! It’s all in what they do with their vanilla. I think they should frame and hang your page in their shop, then give you free vanilla for life! Looks lucious!

  5. What I most enjoyed about this journal page was the way you made it feel so art nouveau. Every detail conveyed that to me. It was a really fun page and I was so pleased you shared it with us for Art Journal Journey today.

Now I’m hungry for ice cream and one of those fabulous looking milk shakes. Hope your weekend is super.

  6. If a post could be delicious, this it it. The ice cream parlour looks a wonderful destination. All credit to them for sticking to serving one flavour of ice cream and your dessert with the bananas looks yummy.
The page you created looks fantastic, I love how you recycled all the pieces, the page tells a story and will be good for remembering your visits and the ice cream it serves.
    Have a good weekend Jo.

    • It’s one of my favourite destinations and the ice cream is wonderful! We are always sorry when it closes for winter and this year we ensured that we had one of their ice creams the first day they opened …lol 😉. Have a good weekend too Yvonne! J 😊 x

  7. That is one pretty and fancy sundae. I have never heard of banoffee sundae but I tell you, it sure looks delicious. With a line like that it must be. Isn’t it great to see summer things opening back up? I have yet to want to go get an ice cream as it’s been pretty chilly but you have inspired me to go. And I also want to say your page today really feels like an old fashioned ice cream parlor ad. It looks so professional 🙂 It is a nice memory of that yummy looking sundae. And also thanks for the Japanese beer selection. For the first half of the week the kids will be with host families so I hope I can get a chance to try one. I’ve never had Japanese beer. 🙂 happy weekend Jo. Hugs-Erika

  11. Really fabulous page Jo – and a great memory page too.
That looks a cool ice-cream parlour. They must have very yummy ice-cream for them to be in business for 90 years – thats wonderful!
I don’t normally have ice-cream when its cold but as it is actually sunny today – yeay – and having seen you sitting there with that large (it looks large to me) portion, I have shouted out to Dave (who is busy making bread and biscuits in the kitchen) and asked if we have any ice-cream…. and me being lazy… he has brought me some 🙂
Hope its sunny and warmer up with you too – have a lovely weekend…. and thanks for the lovely comments you left me yesterday.

  12. What a fascinating concept. I can see the attraction with all the options for toppings. Banana and toffee sauce would be a great place to start, but I’d try something different every time 🙂 I love the way they serve the shakes. Yummy! The interior is so cute! Around here they’d probably do a great business year ’round. Your memory collage is perfect, including past and present 🙂

  13. Oh my Jo how you have taken me back, I believe this is the icecream parlour I visited as a child with my Great Uncle and Auntie on visits to Blackpool and have eaten on various occasions through out my life with my own children. It has been a couple of years since we last visited and we now tend to stay down the North Side of BP moving down as we have aged hee hee!!
Thank you so much for all the information regarding the family business, how wonderful to hear there are still establishments like this that carry on their traditions and name.
A marvellous layout of an ode to Icecream and I have to agree Vanilla it’s the foundation to everything else, who needs any other flavour.
Thank you for sharing another Birthday treat with us all.
Creative wishes & a Sunny Sundae << hee hee Tracey xx
P.S and thank you for sharing over at That's Crafty 🙂
