Winter Robin

When we were visiting family in the South of England we discovered some new walks at a local nature reserve, where we saw lots of wildlife including robins which is one of my favourite birds.

I started by painting diluted Ground Espresso and a little bit of Hickory Smoke Distress Inks onto the page by stamping the ink pads directly onto an acrylic block and picking the ink up with a wet paintbrush. I concentrated the colour around the edges of the page and used the paintbrush bristles to add texture. Then I applied the Hickory Smoke ink again using a blending tool through a retro stencil from That Special Touch of Mica Masks by Creative Expressions. I stamped some small snowflakes from a BoBunny stamp set using Rich Cocoa Memento Ink. With some new dies and my Big Shot I got to work creating some green and red paper branches using Garden Greens Sizzix Thinlets by Tim Holtz; they are stuck to the page using a Zig Memory System glue pen. I was also very excited to receive some die sets from my lovely friend Astrid yesterday, thank you so much! I wanted to use them straight away (grin!), so I selected some square dies and used them to create some pretty edges on a recycled Robin Christmas card and also some patterned papers from Docrafts. I edged them with a grey Faber-Castell Big Brush marker and stuck them to the page along with some other paper embellishments from the same Docrafts pack and a robin image from another recycled Christmas card using some double-sided tape. To finish the page, I added the wording which are letter stickers from the same Docrafts pack.

Here’s one of the beautiful robins that we saw on our walk at the nature reserve (grin!).

If you are interested, here are some facts about robins:

  • This robin is a European robin (Erithacus rubecula), which here in the UK is known simply as a robin or robin redbreast and they are renowned for their friendliness.
  • The term robin is also applied to other birds of a similar appearance, such as the American robin which is actually a thrush and also the Australasian robins.
  • Even though the film Mary Poppins is set in London, the robin that lands on Mary’s finger during “A Spoonful of Sugar” is an American robin instead of a European robin.
  • Nowadays in the UK, robins are synonymous with winter and especially Christmas cards because in Victorian times, our postmen were known as robins due to their bright red uniforms and they delivered cards on Christmas day.
  • The robin often tops the polls for Britain’s favourite bird and has been adopted as a nickname for eight UK football (soccer) clubs who play in red.

We saw the robin while we were walking through woodland. It was a lovely place to explore with its ponds, streams, marshes, grassland, reed beds, hedges and woodlands and it was a haven for a variety of wildlife too. We saw so many birds in the hedgerows and trees.

It was a sunny day when we visited too and we walked for miles enjoying both the scenery and wildlife.

  1. What a gorgeous place to walk Jo. And those winter robins are really cute birds. Much cuter than our American robins. Ours leave for the winter, but last time I visited my mother 2 hours south of me there was a whole flock of them. Maybe that means an early spring. I can hope. 🙂 Love your page. You always make such gorgeous pieces. And you had great inspiration this time. Happy weekend. Hugs-

    • Thanks so much Erika! It seems our robins are quite different, we see them in our gardens more in the winter months and they don’t seem to flock together 😁. Hope you get an early spring and are keeping warm! Happy weekend! J 😊

  2. Love your page and that Robin is beautiful. We had and unusual guest in the woods this morning.. a Bald Eagle!!! In the 19 years we have lived here it’s the only the second time I’ve seen one. the last one which was 8 years ago spent the rest of the winter in the neighborhood. Keeping out fingers crossed this one does too.

    • Thanks so much! We were lucky enough to see Bald Eagles in Wyoming when we vacationed in America 😁. They are so amazing, I hope this one sticks around, I’ll keep everything crossed for you…lol 😉. Wishing you a happy weekend! J 😊

  3. This is another fantastic page Jo – I am in love with the delicate twigs and how you used them so beautiful and the images of the recycled christmas cards fit perfectly – the robin in your own photo is so beautiful as well! – And those fabulous woodland photos make me longing for a walk in the forest as well- but we got snow again and it melts and makes all the paths muddy and it’s extremly cold when the wind beats. Thank you for such a fantastic entry linked to Art Journal Journey!
Always a pleasure to see your pages linked there. Happy weekend dear Jo!

  4. Robins are one of my favourite birds so I of course love your page Jo. That looked a lovely country walk you went on and a great photo of the robin. I’m pretty sure the one in our garden needs glasses as when he comes looking for food ( I usually throw him some little yellow fat pellets with insects and berries in) sometimes he just sits and looks at me like he can’t see where they are.
Have a lovely weekend…hope your weather hasn’t been too awful this week what with snow and winds. Gill xx

    • Thank you! I remember that you like all birds and with robins being so friendly I’m wondering if you have ever fed a robin by hand? Although if your robin needs glasses maybe not …lol 😉. It’s been cold here with stormy winds and some rain, and also some sunshine too so we have managed to go for a walk most days without getting too wet …lol 😉. Wishing you a happy weekend! J 😊

      • Just noticed this before I go and see your latest post…. to answer your question about feeding Robin by hand.. yes .. over the years on and off, with patience I’ve been privildged to a few different birds feeding on my hand (and Daves) – you might have seen my other blog http://theartofanything.blogspot.co.uk/ I’ve been a bit remiss keeping that up lately but you can see a few photos hand feeding-but the best was with the pair of collared doves that came around for a good 2 years. Nature is certainly full of lovely surprises 🙂
Right … off to read your latest post xxx

  5. A lovely project honoring a lovely bird. We have one that comes to feed at our house a couple times a day – with the sparrows and tits! And I’m from Michigan. The “robin” is our state bird.

  6. I really love your homage to the robin. I know your robins are much different from ours, so I enjoyed seeing these not only in journal form, but also in photos. That looks like it is a fabulous place to walk, and I really loved the beauty and how green things were.

Thank you beyond belief for joining us with this fabulous journal page at Art Journal Journey today. And thanks for the lovely photos and information about robins, too.

    • Thanks so much! It was a beautiful place and as you say the fields were “green” as there had been a lot of rain, this also meant that it was very muddy in places, which we tried to avoid …lol 😉. Wishing you a happy weekend! J 😊

  7. Such a pretty page. i love robins too, but they are no where to be found now. We will see them in 2 or 3 months as they announce Spring has arrived. I’m already on the lookout. It’s so nice to see scenery without snow!

    • Thanks so much! What a lovely way to announce Spring and I sort of guessed you’d be looking out for them …lol 😉. We see our robins more this time of year and we haven’t had snow although it’s been colder, as you can see in the robin photo and the way he has puffed his feathers up to keep warm 😁. Happy weekend! J 😊

  10. I love woodland walks, and this is definitely a scenic one. Our American robins haven’t been on the patio at all since the autumn, but they showed up during our recent snow. They are a big favorite, these yard birds, and very tolerant of our presence. I’ve never seen a European Robin in person. It’s such a pretty little bird 🙂

    • It is a lovely walk and I think you would have enjoyed it too 😁. They are such pretty birds and so friendly too. I noticed on my American travels that our European robin is much smaller than the American one. Wishing you a great weekend! J 😊

  11. Jo Your page is sooo lovely. I love the robins too-where we live now we don’t see too many, a few in the spring and fall-I think we catch them on their journey to where they are going. when we lived in a more northern state we always saw lots of them they are really fun to watch after a rain and when they get the worms lol Happy Sunday (or maybe Monday now for you) hugs Kathy

    • Thank you, the nature reserve we went to is in Horsham which you may know 😁. It was much colder this weekend and we had sleet and snow all day yesterday although it didn’t settle as it was too wet. So we decided to stay indoors in the warmth and that meant more crafting fun …lol 😉. I hope you had a lovely weekend too and that you kept warm especially with your boiler being out of action! Have a happy and creative week! J 😊 x
