New Year Goals 2018

This time of year we always write some goals to give us focus, keep us on track and get the most from our life together which makes me and my hubby very happy (grin!). So I created a journal page to store our written goals so we know where they are and can easily look at them throughout the year.

I started by covering the page with a Vine background stamp in alternating blocks of Grape Jelly, Lilac Roses and Lulu Lavender Memento Ink and then Danube Blue and Bahama Blue Memento Ink. Then I edged the page using Navy and Purple Spectrum Aqua markers smudging the ink with a baby wipe and my finger. Next I stuck some leftover gold outline sticker surrounds on the page, mainly around the edges, to add more detail. The doves and olive branches are fussy cut from a Christmas card and are edged with a metallic gold pen. I stuck the branches down first using a UHU Stic and when the glue had dried, outlined them using a black UniPin marker and added some shadows using a Slate Spectrum Aqua Marker. I also recycled the envelope from the Christmas card, which had the most beautiful rich gold interior, to make two compartments to store the cards which detail our goals for previous years and also our current goals. They are stuck to the page using double-sided tape and adorned with the pretty doves using a UHU Stic. To finish, I added the words using gold letters and numbers to depict the year, which are peel-off alphabet stickers.

What could be better when writing your goals to have a nice cup of green tea and a slice of homemade Christmas cake (grin!). As I’m sharing my drink it reminds me to join T Stands for Tuesday and say a big hello the T Gang – sending you all Happy T Day wishes!

I’m pleased to say we made very good progress on our goals last year (grin!). I suppose they could be called New Year resolutions as we write them in January, but I have to say that we view them as goals as they are stepping points to our more long-term aspirations and we find they sometimes change and adapt during the year as we try things out.

Now I’m wondering if you have any goals or resolutions for the New Year too?

If you are interested here are some facts about New Year Resolutions:

  • Making a New Year’s resolution is a tradition where a person resolves to change a trait or behaviour, accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life.
  • It is thought making New Year Resolutions dates back to the ancient Babylonians, about 4,000 years ago when they celebrated the New Year on the first new moon after the spring equinox. The Babylonians made New Year’s resolutions to keep themselves in good standing with the gods and they made practical resolutions such as to get out of debt or to return borrowed farm equipment.
  • Nowadays, the success rate for New Year’s Resolutions is low as often the goals are unrealistic, people don’t track their progress, they forget about them or too many goals are made in the first place.
  • Popular resolutions are:
    • Diet, exercise and weight loss
    • Enjoy life and be more positive
    • Save money
    • Learn something new
    • Be more organised
    • Give more time and money to charity
    • Be a nicer human being
    • Make new friends
    • Spend more time with family
    • Take a trip

  1. A wonderful page and such a great idea to do this together with hubby! Also love the idea of having little places to store your goals for the year (I have mine in my bullet journal). Great idea also to use some recycling in this project! Have a good week and of course thanks also for adding this page to our challenge at MMM!

  2. I do goals also. I like how you put it- to give you some focus in the new year. I will admit I am one of those goal people who doesn’t always fulfill my goals, But to a goal is something to work on or work towards, not have to meet. So I love your page, Using the gold on your page gives it such importance. And it’s beautiful. And I’ll have a piece of Christmas cake and tea. It looks yummy! Happy early T day and thanks for joining us at AJJ. Hugs-Erika

  4. I’m one of those who fall off the wagon with keeping resolutions. Mostly because I have made too many and that makes an unreasonable outcome. Maybe if I had such a pretty page and place to write down goals, I’d have a better chance of keeping resolutions. Your Christmas cake looks absolutely delicious. Have a happy day!

  5. I LOVE your beautiful page – oh my gosh – I would never have thought that this is a recycled card page project! Absolutely adorable – your style is just unique! I am so happy to see this linked to Erika’s theme and also to Moo Mania & More , thank you very much Jo! This is much appreciated! Green tea is normally not to my taste but I got a “green tea lemon seabuckthorn teamix” for christmas and I must say that it tastes delicious. And together with your christmas cake it must be a delicacy! I can say that all this goals in the list of the popular resoultions are mine the whole year long. But I guess it takes a whole life to accomplish this all – and that’s o.k. for meas well! II am quite sure that it would be boring in the end to be that perfect human being we are looking for! I wish you a happy new week and Happy T-Day and I am looking forward to seeing your post tomorrow as well — most secret …..Hush!

  6. I LOVE this, Jo. I love everything about it, right down to the awesome doves of peace you have cut. The background is so calming and lovely, too.

I post my goals each year, usually on the 1st. Then I look back to see how well I did from the previous year. Some years I do far better than others, and in 2017, I allowed a few to fall through the cracks. I agree that resolutions are not the right word, because it immediately sets you up for failure.

This is a great Art Journal Journey entry. It certainly works well with Erika’s theme.

You still have some Christmas cake? I can’t believe it’s lasted this long. I’d have devoured it by now. I’ll have mine with coffee, though, please.

Thanks for sharing your lovely journal page with Art Journal Journey, and thanks for sharing your Christmas cake and green tea in those adorable deer mugs with us for T this week, too.

    • Thanks very much! We try not to overindulge and normally substitute what we normally eat for Christmas treats, so we are just eating the last of the Christmas cake 😁. It was so yummy and it’ll be all gone by then end of the week if you would like me to send you a piece …lol 😁. Happy T Day! J 😊

    • Thanks so much! I enjoyed seeing your goals that you posted on your blog and you have made such a great start on them already 😁. No cooking challenges for me, I think I’d be way too stressed …lol 😉. It’s been sunny here but very cold, we’ve actually had frosts which is unusual as we live by the sea …lol 😀. Have a good week too! J 😊

  8. This is such an attractive page with these colours together and the winding leaves. You are a genius at making these backgrounds with the magically-named colours. The gold made compartments to hold your goals and the lilac doves of peace are just so lovely.
Happy New Year, Jo. I look forward to seeing more of your art in 2018.

  11. I love your page, and everything it represents Jo. Even your color choices are soothing and peaceful. Interesting facts about resolutions and such. I used to make a list but now prefer to focus on one word for the year which does also flow into goals. Love your tea mugs! Happy T day!

Oh that yummy cake! I’m eyeing that layer of marzipan as we can’t get that here. Strange as we live in an almond producing area!
Wishing you and your family a very happy (and healthy) 2018,
    Happy T-Day,

  14. I love the teamwork of your goal setting, Jo. You created a lovely page to remind you both throughout the year. I don’t make (negative) resolutions like lose weight, be kinder. I prefer a word of the year to help me grow. As I look at your page, I see that “Team Jo” chose all positive words as well 😉

    Happy T-day! Hugs, Eileen

  15. Hello dear Jo!
Wonderful idea to make such a page for good resolutions. I like the nice colors and the doves on the golden background, also the branch stamps and cutters.
I also love your sweet deer mugs and your cake looks so yummy. But for me no cake and sweets, I must loose weight and think about sport. Wintertime makes hungry and lazy. 😉
    Have a wonderful new year.
    Big Hugs
