Music makes my heart sing

I love listening to music when I’m crafting and have quite an eclectic taste, for when I feel like classical music, then Johann Strauss II is by far my favourite with his joyful polkas and waltzes, his music seems so happy to me (grin!)). What could be better than listening to “An der schönen blauen Donau” (The Blue Danube), which inspired my colourful musical vintage page today.

I started by experimenting with a new technique of adding Liquitex Matte Gel Medium to the whole page as a base for Faber-Castell Gelatos. Once the gel medium was dry I scribbled Snow Cone, Lime, Boysenberry, Margarita Mix gelatos over the top and used a wet finger to blend the colours. This was really easy to do and the gel medium created a slippery surface for the gelatos to glide over and is definitely a technique I would try again. Next I used various stamps to create the patterned background using Memento Inks. This included a Diamond Background stamp by Art Impressions using an aptly named Blue Danube ink, a circle and heart stamp by Sugar loaf Inc. using Bahama Blue, a Flower Tile stamp by Rubber Soul using Grape Jelly, a Serpentine Background stamp by Art Impressions using Summer Sky and a 4-Point Star Background stamp by Art Impressions using Lilac Posies. Then I rubbed some of these stamped images with a baby wipe to remove some of the ink and gelato which created a beautiful translucent effect. To finish the background, I added the roses, moulding, ballerina, music sheet and script images from a stamp set called Musicality by Docrafts using black Archival Ink. I really like the layers of stamping and the translucency of the colours and I enjoyed experimenting with all the techniques I used to produce them. Next I covered the page with a thin layer of gel medium to seal the colour and to allow the rub-on transfers to adhere easier to the page as the gelato has a tendency to coat the back of the transfer stopping it transferring to the page. I used an alphabet letter set of rub-on transfers to create the wording and went over the letters with a white Uni Posca paint pen so they stood out more. The hearts are wedding place cards from Dunelm which I stuck to the page using a UHU Stic. I used a paper punch to create the flowers using some sheet music, coloured the edges of the petals using Kingfisher and Peacock Blue Spectrum Aqua Markers and stuck a pearl Gel Stone Sticker in the centre.

I arranged the flowers on the hearts with some lace flowers, silver metallic ribbon and a blue enamel Vintage flower from Poundworld using Glossy Accents. Then I added some pieces of wire pearl decorative chain which I also used to swirl across the page using Glossy Accents to stick it into place, this finished the page.

It’s a new month and I’m pleased to join the lovely Yvonne from Meggy’s way over at Art Journal Journey for her theme “Colour in my World” with my colourful page and I think music colours my world too – Happy September!

As I used metal decorative wire and metallic ribbon on my page, I’m joining in the fun over at Country View Challenge where the theme is “Metal”.

With the vintage look and feel I created on my page, I’m also joining the lovely Astrid who is part of the Design Team over at The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge for their “Vintage” theme.

A few weeks ago I was talking to Susi about the Vienna Opera House in Austria and my love for Strauss, which inspired this page. Does anyone else watch the Vienna Philharmonic’s famous New Year’s Day Concerts?  It’s televised here in the UK and I always watch it – I love it! Of course Austrian composer Strauss always features at the concert and you can watch the “An der schönen blauen Donau” (The Blue Danube) being beautifully played by Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the 2011 New Year’s Concert on the YouTube link above.

If you are interested here are some facts about the music:

  • “The Blue Danube” is the common English title of “An der schönen blauen Donau”, which is German for “By the Beautiful Blue Danube”.
  • Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899) is part of a famous musical dynasty being the son of Johann Strauss I. He wrote more than 400 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, operettas, a ballet and other dance tunes. He is also known as “The Waltz King” and he composed this particular waltz in 1866.
  • Strauss adapted it into an orchestral version for the Paris World’s Fair in 1867 and it became a great success.
  • Words have been written to accompany the music but the instrumental version is by far the most commonly performed today.
  • When Strauss’s stepdaughter, asked the composer Johannes Brahms for his autograph, he wrote down the first bars of The Blue Danube and “Leider nicht von Johannes Brahms” which means “Alas! not by Johannes Brahms”.

As T Stands for Tuesday I’m sharing a drink with the T Gang and wishing you a Happy T Day!

We currently have family staying with us for the week, so I’m sorry that I haven’t had any time to blog and visit everyone recently. We had a fun weekend and I thought this photo matched the look and feel of my page, so here’s my Green tea and for those of you who are coffee lovers a cappuccino (just in shot on the left-hand side) at a local café we visited (grin!).

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. I like classical music but I’ve never really listened to Strauss. I have a CD of the New Year’s Vienna music event but I don’t know if they televised it here in the US. I have never seen it. I do really like your page though Jo. the blue is gorgeous. I take it that is the Snow Cone. 🙂 And what a beautiful tea table too. I love the white-almost a formal feeling tea. 🙂 Happy new week. Hugs-Erika

  2. I love the Blue Danube, but we don’t get that program here in the States. I really LOVED your latest AJJ page. I like how you treated the gelatos and all the different products you experimented with. Those rubber stamps were beautiful, too.

So glad you are having fun with your company, and the idea that you shared both tea and cappuccino with us for T this week makes me smile. Thanks for sharing your lovely AJJ page and your drinks with us.

  3. Wonderful journal page, with so much to see and enjoy, lovely colours and textures, too. I’m glad you enjoy Strauss while creating. I love classical music and opera, but Strauss is not one of my faves – tastes are different, main things we are happy with our choices. Have a great week, hugs, Valerie

  4. Its a gorgeous page Jo and I do love the the inspirational waltz music you were listening to when you created this romantic page. We listen to the concert on TV as well.
I love how you layered the colours and images on the background. its sounds a great technique you used with the gel medium as well. The white hearts and flowers all add to the feeling that all is well in world when I look at your page.
Thank you Jo for adding this wonderful page to my theme at Art journal Journey.
The tea setting looks special as well and does match the page beautifully.
Have a great week with your visiting family .

  6. I ADORE your beautiful page dear >Jo Jo<(hann) Strauß would love it as well!
So much wonderful details – so soft ! I can always find the echo of my own feelings and reflections in your pages. Thank you for that!
The Danube is more green and sometimes grey ( lol) nowadays but this musical piece is so traditional here and many Austrians watch the New Year's Concert on TV every year – I am no exception.
When I hear the "Donauwalzer" always shiver runs up my spine.
I will never forget the wonderful New Year's Concert in 1988 that I joined live at the Wiener Musikverein. I fear I will never again get tickets for it because they are rare and thus expensive.
Your coffee/teatable for TSFT goes well with this music – indeed!
Hope you really enjoy your family visit and I say THANK YOU for being with us at Art Journal Journey and thank you once more for the inspiration and all the lovely encouragement you gave to us all during your hosting in August!
    Happy T-Day ahead !

    • Thanks very much! I created this page whilst listening to Strauss and I’m so glad to be reminded of this music and our happy conversation when I look at it too 😁. How amazing that you have been to one of the New Year’s concerts, it must have been breathtaking and I think you lived a dream – how wonderful it must be to recall such memories! As you say it’s so difficult to get tickets and even though they are so expensive they are gone so quickly when you try and buy them online. I’m happy to enjoy the concert from my living room and dream of being there; the scenery, music and scent of the flowers must be intoxicating 😁. I enjoyed hosting AJJ, thank you so much! I hope you had a lovely weekend and all is well with you! Wishing you a very happy start to the week dear Susi! J x
      p.s. Happy T Day too! J 😊

  7. I love layers of stamping on a background and I agree with you Gelatos do spread better on a prepared surface and are much more fun that way! A lovely page Jo, thank you for showing us at Country View Challenges.
I did enjoy making the metal frame, the techniques are indeed fun and so easy!

  8. What a lovely page. It is as elegant as the waltzes. I always watch the New Year’s concert. I have watched it since childhood. When I was a child we would watch the concert and after that there was the ski jumping. (I grew up in Holland so it might not be the same as in the UK).
    Enjoy your visitors,
    Happy T-Day,
    Lisca

Though I love classical music I have never been a huge fan of Strauss, but as I am writing this I am listening to the youtube link you posted and am actually loving it. The dancers are wonderful too, both the girls and the boys, they brought a big smile to my face! Thanks for providing the link! And yes, how amazing it would be to sit and watch it live…Finally thank you for joining us over at Mixed Media Monthly and enjoy your family visit!!! Blog visiting can always wait…

    • Thanks so much for returning and your lovely comment 😁. Wishing you a Happy T Day too! J 😊
With regard to my art journal pages, I crop the photos to just show the page on my blog posts and my pages are actually in a spiral bound pad. Once the journal is complete I cover the front and back of the book and then I always sit down with a drink to look through the pages to remember what I’ve been up to 😁. I also have a book stand in my craft room where a different page is displayed everyday from one of my Art Journals; it’s lovely to look at the page and recall the memories associated with it! If you are interested you can find more information and photos of what I do with my pages on a post I made earlier this year which is called Art Journals and is on the link below:

  11. That’s a beautiful page, Jo! I have to try the gel medium technique under gelatos. It makes the colors more brilliant. I like to blend my Gelatos with wet wipes. I think the little bit of soap helps them slide around really nicely.
Yes, we watch the Vienna Philharmonic’s famous New Year’s Day Concerts whenever we can find them on our TV. They’re fabulous!
    Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen

  12. The New Years Day concert is a must for us too! When we visited Vienna we had hoped to attend a concert there but there weren’t any on while we were there! We did see a Mozart Mini Opera at the Opera House but as it was in the standing gallery it was quite tiring so we didn’t stay for the longer Opera after it! Your page is wonderful and definitely has portrayed the joy of the Blue Danube! Love how you blended those colours! Happy T Day Chrisx
