Summer

There is so much to love about summer such as hot days spent relaxing and enjoying yourself, just like the two ladies on my page. Like me, they want to join in the fun over at Art Journal Journey with Bluebeard’s and Elizabeth’s “Summertime Love” theme.

I started this page by combining navy and white acrylic paints to create a bright blue colour, then I applied this paint thickly to the page with a paint brush so you could see the brush strokes. I fussy cut the two ladies from a magazine and stuck them down using a UHU Stic once the paint had dried. Then I stamped a black border by Hampton Art using black Archival Ink and used a black Uni Pin marker to colour and outline some of the squares. On the right hand side of the page I arranged different papers by Craft Sensations which are stuck down using a UHU Stic along with some spotted paper tape. Next I added the “Summer” title and I also applied the other summer sayings and words, which are rub-on transfer sentiments by Royal & Langnickel, to the papers which I stuck down earlier. I added paper flowers by Dovecraft and decorated their centres with white felt flowers, buttons and dome enamel dots; these are stuck into place using glossy accents.  The polka dot butterfly buttons, tag and pink flowers are wooden embellishments and are stuck to the page using glossy accents; I tied black paper twine to the centre of the butterfly buttons and to the top of the tag before I stuck them down. To finish, I added a polka dot strawberry and some blue dome enamel dots.

Pimm’s is a very popular summertime drink here in the UK and as T Stands for Tuesday it must be “Pimm’s o’clock” so I’m sharing a jug of Pimm’s and saying a big hello to the T Gang – Happy T Day!

For those of you who may not be familiar with this drink, Pimm’s No. 1 is a fragrant gin-based drink which is combined with distinctive botanicals and bitter herbs, caramelized orange and delicate spices. It is mixed with lemonade and served over ice with strawberries, cucumber and mint. You may have noticed I added the word “lemonade” and also a strawberry to my page (grin!).

If you’re interested, here are some more Pimm’s related facts:

  1. Pimm’s No.1 was invented and originally served at an oyster bar in London in the 1800’s to aid digestion and was a homemade concoction mixed by a Mr. Pimm.
  2. The Pimm’s recipe is top secret and there are 6 different types of Pimm’s which differ only in their base alcohol e.g. gin, vodka, scotch etc.
  3. It is traditionally served with chopped strawberries, cucumber and mint which you can snack on at the end of the glass of Pimm’s, well that’s if you can wait that long (grin!). It’s a good way to get your daily dose of fruit and vegetables – or ‘one of your five a day’ as we say in the UK.
  4. “It’s Pimm’s o’clock” was a phrase coined by some clever marketing people to show that it’s great for sharing. Here’s one of the adverts using this catch phrase.
  5. Pimm’s is often seen at Wimbledon, polo matches and the Henley Regatta and is also served at Buckingham Palace by appointment to the Queen so we’re in good company sipping this drink in the sunshine!

    • Thanks for sharing those happy memories and I have found that Pimm’s seems more popular in Southern England 😀, still it’s nice to have it at home too, I get more fruit and veggies that way … lol 😉. Happy T Day! J 😊

  2. I love your fantastic page and the girls enjoying the summer sun in that great swimwear.
I have to admit to looking for shady places to sit, I would be looking like a cooked beetroot if I didn’t, even covered in sun creams.
However I would join you in a Pimms any time, that is for sure a happy, holiday drink, its years since I tasted one of those.
    Happy T day Jo.

  3. Great journal page! I love the swimsuits that the ladies are modeling, and I also love the way that you made sort of a cascading cluster of embellishments on the right side of the page.

I had never heard of Pimms before, but it does sound good. I bet the strawberries, cucumber, and mint give it a nice, fresh flavor. Happy T Day!

  4. I want YOU to do all my fussy cutting, because my scissors are now so dull, they will barely cut hot butter, much less copier strength paper. You do such a good job, and remind me of me when my scissors were workable. Needless to say, I’m in love with this summertime page. I know it’s filled with love, too. Thanks for sharing it on Art Journal Journey today. It’s an unquestionably beautiful entry.

I’ve never heard of Pimms before. I have cucumbers, strawberries, and mint. Now if I just had some Pimms 1. I did like the advert. I laughed so hard, I had to play it twice. Four of you, one of me, 10 of you, one of me. Still laughing.

Thanks for sharing your Pimms facts, figures, and lovely drinks with us for T this Tuesday. It certainly is a colorful (and supposedly healthy) drink!

  5. I had pimms at Borough Market, just so I could say I tried it. Happy to have done that, but it won’t be my drink of choice, a little to sweet for me. I do like the way it looks served up in the Mason jars. Beautiful page

  6. I’ve seen Pimm’s mentioned in books but had no idea what it was, so I am glad you shared that with us. I think I need to try one sometime because its always fun to try new drinks, especially those that are representative of a place. And you really made a summery page too Jo. I like the bathing beauties and I bet they would enjoy a Pimm’s. 🙂 Happy T day. hugs-Erika

    • Thanks so much dear Jenny! I loved the picture of the ladies when I saw it and as I wanted a contrasting colour for the background the blue seemed the perfect choice as it still reminds me of sunny days whether that be the sky or the sea 😀. Lemon ice tea sounds lovely, we often have ice tea with mint but I’ll have to try it with lemon instead. Have a great week! J 😊

  12. An amazing Summertime page with a great mix of colours.

I loved reading about Pimms and it brought back memories of 50 plus years ago when I first went to Jersey and the in drink was Pimms. We had every number Pimms we could try and came back with a bag full of the things that were added to the glasses at that time. Every bar had its own ideas for glass decoration.

    Thanks for the memory Jo

    Happy T Day

  13. What a lovely page, so summery! I recognise and remember those swimsuits. That is frightening! And what an innovation it was when elasticated/stretchy swimware was developed.
So interesting to learn about Pimms. I have never had Pimms but when we go to the UK next month I shall definitely try it. If it is bitter, I will probably like it.
    Happy T-Day,

    • Thank you! The swimsuits look lovely in the red gingham 😀. I have found that Pimm’s is easier to find in the South of England than the North as it’s much more popular there. It tastes more fruity than bitter and I would definately give it a try to see if you like it … lol 😉. Wishing you a Happy T Day too! J 😊

    • Don’t they look wonderful in their swimsuits 😀. You’ll probably find Pimm’s No.1 there as it’s very popular in New Orleans, I quickly searched the internet using “Pimms Memphis” and it looks like they sell it in a few liquor stores (that’s a full bottle mind) and also some bars 😁. Thanks and wishing you a Happy T Tuesday! J 😊

  15. What a happy nostalgic summery page, Jo. I like the arrangement of paper and tape strips interspersed with summer things on the right. How fashions change. Not just the clothes but how women’s bodies are “supposed” to be.

The Pimm’s drinks are too pretty to drink 😉

    Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen
