Art Journals

My dear friend Patty over at Magpie’s Nest inspired this post following her question last T Day “You have me wondering if you do anything further with your pages? Do you bind them into books?”

So I thought I would show you. Although I crop the photos to just show the page on my blog posts, my pages are actually in a spiral bound pad and once the journal is complete I cover the front and back of the book. This is the front:

… and this is the back:

To cover my Art Journal books I use leftover mixed media materials that I save from the pages I create. This particular book is covered with the papers that I use to test stamps and colours before I commit to using them on my actual pages. So having accumulated quite a few papers, I ripped them into pieces to create a collage and stuck them down using Liquitex Matte Gel Medium. Next I outlined the edges of the paper pieces using a black Faber-Castell Big Brush marker and smudged the ink with a baby wipe and my finger. To add definition I also used a black Sharpie Permanent marker, a black Uni Pin marker and a white Uniball gel pen along the edges. I stamped the sentiments on both the front and back covers using a Sand & Surf  Hampton Art stamp set and black Archival Ink. I also added some small leftover outline sticker shapes which I coloured black with a black Sharpie. Using the same black Archival Ink, on the front cover I stamped the wording “Art Journal”, the number “6” which represents the number of this journal and my “Handcrafted with love” stamp. I always use this stamp and sign my name on my creations too. To finish I covered the whole page in the gel medium so it is stronger and more resistant to wear and tear with it covering my Art Journal and I folded washi tape over the edges of the covers to give the journal more stability.

I’m so pleased to be able to join Hazel who is hosting the “Magical Mystery Tour” challenge over at Art Journal Journey and I’d like to thank Susi from Froebelsternchen for asking me to link my magical way to make collages to this month’s theme.

The pad I use is by Daler Rowney, it’s A4 in size and spiral bound. There are 30 pages per book and it contains a high quality paper designed for traditional art, mixed media, collage and visual journaling. Each page is lightly textured and white in colour and it’s great for creating and using a variety of dry and wet techniques. I like the spiral binding as it makes it easier to work on new pages by keeping the surface flat, it allows for thicker pages to be created as needed and makes it easier to browse through your creations when they are finished.

When each journal book is complete I always sit down with a drink to look through the pages to remember what I’ve been up to. I also have a book stand in my craft room where a different page is displayed everyday from one of my Art Journals; it’s lovely to look at the page and recall the memories associated with it!

I publish my posts on Monday night ready for T Stands for Tuesday and as this Monday happens to be my Birthday, I’d like to thank all of you who have wished me early Birthday Wishes! My birthday celebrations started early this year, on Friday we went to The Ghurka Restaurant for a meal with our friends. The restaurant is an “all you can eat” buffet serving Asian food from Nepal, India, China and Thailand which is run by a former Ghurka (Ghurka’s are Nepalese soldiers who form part of the British Army). We had a wonderful time and the food was delicious. Having never had Nepalese food before I took advantage of the selection available, as well as some of my favourite Chinese dishes; the top plate is Char Sui Pork, Gurkha Momo (Steamed Dumpling), Chicken Chow Mein and Sweet & Sour Chicken, and on the bottom plate is Gurkha Noodles, Gurkha Daal on a bed of steamed rice, Gurkha Pea and Potato Curry and Gurkha Vegetable Curry. I’m also sharing a glass of Rosé White Zinfandel wine that I enjoyed with my meal and I’m saying a big hello to all the T Gang – Cheers and Happy T Day!

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  2. Thank you for sharing the backstory of your journals and how you use them, Jo. Your covers are wonderful – what a terrific way to summarize what’s inside. I also like that you display the pages in a regular way to keep the memories ever-present.

That oriental food looks wonderful! Chinese food is one of my weaknesses. Happy birthday and happy T-day to a lovely, thoughtful, talented lady 😉 Hugs, Eileen

  4. Happy Birthday Jo, even though I am now 1 day late. I’m glad you showed your finished journals. The cover you showed is great-and how smart to used left over bits from your pages so it all seems to belong together. I have ever had Nepalese food either, but it does look good. In fact it all sounds good. I don’t know how you would pick. 🙂 But on your birthday you can have it all, right? Happy T day too. Hugs-Erika

    • Thanks for your lovely comments and wishes! The Nepalese food was amazing and there was so much choice at the buffet that you wanted to try it all – I think that’s ok on your birthday too … lol! Happy T Day! J 🙂

  5. I may have been a bit late to wish you a happy birthday, but I believe in extending the holiday. After all, it’s still April 3 in my part of the world. So happy birthday, dear Jo.

I saw your comment to Patty last week, but had NO idea you have so many of these journals already made. Silly me imagined that because you had just started blogging, you also just started creating these art journals. I am in AWE of the covers, because they represent recycled art. This is a great idea and a wonderful way to use up those bits and pieces of leftovers. Truly recycling at its best.

Your meal looks wonderful. I’ve had Indian, Thai, and Chinese food before, but not Nepalese. It all looks so tempting, and I suspect it tasted good, too. Thanks for sharing these birthday memories, the delicious looking food, the lovely journals you’ve made (makes me want to touch them), and your wine with us for T this Tuesday. And of course, one more happy birthday wish.

    • Don’t worry, I’m happy to extend my birthday to account for US time … lol 🙂 . In actual fact we celebrate our birthdays for a week in this house because rather than buy each other a main present we like to go on days out as our birthday present instead . I always have bits and pieces leftover from my pages and hate to throw them out, so it made sense to me to use them up on the covers. That way they remind me of what’s inside 🙂 . Thanks so much and wishing you happiness this T Day! J 🙂

    WOW!!!
The front- and backcover you show here is both UTTERLY beautiful- in addition to this the washi-tape boarder is a super idea . The collages are made with great skills .The edging makes the single pieces defined and brings together all in perfect depth and harmony – that’s the magical way to make collages .- it would fit the new AJJ theme perfectly as well, would be great to see this wonderful post there!
Happy T-Day – the Ghurka Restaurant meal looks fantastic !

  10. Your journal covers look fantastic and I liked the idea of the washi tape borders and the gel medium to protect them. I am currently using a book pad like yours and find the page thickness great for paints and water sprays.

  11. Well Happy Birthday! (Belated). Sounds like you had a really nice birthday.
No, I’ve never had Nepalese food either. So that is also what I would have gone for. How interesting. It looks really tasty. I always choose something I don’t know, or something I could not cook at home.
Thank you for sharing your art journals. It’s great to see what you do with them. I have often wondered. Do you write some journaling on the back of the page to remind you when it was and where you went? Or do you rely on your memory?
    Happy T-Day,
    Hugs,

    • Thanks Lisca! We are still celebrating, I like to travel around for my birthday (much like you did for yours 🙂 ). We went to Liverpool yesterday and have more places to visit this week – such fun! Although I do have a good memory when it comes to my journal pages as they are so personal, I also have a separate A4 writing book which I detail my page information in, this includes a list of materials, my inspiration and learnings from the techniques I used 🙂 . Thanks again and wishing you a Happy T Day! J 🙂

    • Thanks so very much Patty! We always have a week of celebrations as our birthday present, so we have lots of outings planned for the rest of the week 🙂 . Yesterday we went to Liverpool and had the most wonderful time at the Walker Art Gallery, we went to see the Pre-Raphaelites “Beauty and Rebellion” exhibition. And my celebrations keep going afterwards because we found out that the Alphonse Mucha “In Quest of Beauty” exhibition is coming to this gallery in June so my hubby is taking me to see it as a belated Birthday present – how wonderful:-) . I seem to remember how much you love Alphonse Mucha too as I fell in love with his work due to one of your posts 🙂 . Wishing you a Happy T Day dear Patty! J 🙂

I think you and your Mr may treat most days as special days with how you enjoy each moment. Mr M and I try to do the same. I sometimes say that he makes everyday feel like my birthday (well almost LOL).
