Life is like a tea cup

It was a beautiful sunny day on Friday so we decided to we walk into town and run some errands, we also stopped by Alices Tea Room where we saw a pottery teacup sign saying “Life is like a teacup, to be filled to the brim and enjoyed with friends”. This reminded me of our T Day get together over at T Stands for Tuesday so I created this page!

I wanted to experiment and create a background that looked like old cracked plaster work, so I started by sketching some crack marks on my page and then covered the page with white gesso using a palette knife. Next I used Spectrum Aqua markers to add some colour by scribbling the ink on an acrylic block and applying them with a baby wipe, I also dragged the acrylic block across the page so the ink added texture. I then emphasised the crack marks I had sketched by painting diluted Cold Grey Faber-Castell Big Brush marker ink over them and adding fine detail using a black Uni Pin marker and a white gel pen. I fussy cut a teacup image and stuck it to the page using a UHU Stic, then I painted the image using Derwent Inktense pencils to emphasis the colours, patterns and textures. I covered the rose buds on the image with silk ones which I cut in half to reduce their thickness and adhered using Glossy Accents. I added paper twine to a tag, distressed the edges and stuck it down using double-sided foam tape. The torn papers are from a paper pack from my local craft shop, which I edged with the Cold Grey Big Brush marker and stuck to the page using Liquitex Matte Gel Medium. Then I added more fine detail to the image and torn paper edges using a black Uni Pin marker and white gel pen. Next I adorned the page with some adhesive fabric patterned with little roses which I cut out and also some lace outline stickers and leaf border stickers. To finish I stamped the sentiment onto tissue paper using Archival Ink and attached it to the page using Matte Gel Medium.

As my inspiration was the sign I saw whilst “Out and About”, I’m pleased to be able to join Yvonne from Meggy’s Way again over at Art Journal Journey.

We were delighted to visit Alices Tea Room again. Here is the pretty little teacup sign we saw on one of the dressers in the Tea Room.

We sat in another part of Alices this time and had a lovely view of the toadstools and flowers adorning the window.

There is so much thought and detail gone into the interior design – there are stairs on the ceiling and chairs as lights, upside down electric plug sockets and even the door fittings are back to front!

We were kindly bought a voucher for afternoon tea as a gift, which we decided to use as it was such a sunshiny day. There was a delicious selection of sandwiches, crisps (chips) and salad.

We also had the yummy scones which we topped with cream, strawberry jam and fresh strawberries. The mismatched tea service caught my eye too with the beautiful gold patterned plate and the tiny roses on the saucer.

It was all accompanied by a pot or two of green tea, don’t you just love the table – “I’m late, I’m late for a very important date!” Luckily this isn’t true for my weekly catch up with Elizabeth and Bluebeard over at T Stands for Tuesday, where you share a drink and chat to the T Gang – wishing you all a Happy T Day!

Although the top tier of cakes was very tempting especially with the fondant icing “Eat me” on top, we were full up and so we took them all home to enjoy the next day.  What a wonderful time we had, hope you enjoyed it too!

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. I’m so glad you brought us back to the tea room. I love that place. Yummy! And I also love your page and your cracked wall background came out perfect. I actually thought you used a printed paper for it. But I like it even more knowing you made it yourself. Beautiful work. And Happy T day Jo. Hugs-erika

  2. Alice’s looks like THE most charming tea room ever!
It must be a good size too. The red and white oil cloths and toadstools are fab.
What a gorgeous feast OH MY…I would be over the moon with that delicious scone topped with the fresh strawberry no less ❤🍄❤. I could go on about your lovely Alice photos BUT I have to compliment you once again Jo on your creativity. Your plastered background is super and my eye went immediately to that pretty cracked cup (I adore mismatched china at tea shoppes!) on that doily “shelf”. The shading made great Trompe l’oeil effect. Another really lovely journal page. You have me wondering If you do anything further with your pages? Do you bind them into books?
Have a Happy T Day dear Jo oxo

    • Thanks so much dear Patty! The Alices has two main rooms as well as a small outside eating area on the pavement/sidewalk 🙂 . If I went there just for tea and a cake I would always choose the scone as not only does it have the fresh strawberries topping, it is served warm and just melts in your mouth – delicious! The journal page was fun to create and my pages are already in a book bound by a spiral binder, there are about 30 pages in each book. I create my pages in chronological order so when I have filled a book with my creations, I then create a design on the front and back cover too. I have a book stand in my craft room and display a page from one of my books each day so I can re-live my memories – such fun! Maybe I’ll create a blog to show you 😉 . Wishing you every happiness this T Day! J 🙂

  3. I was so overwhelmed, I didn’t know where to start on this one. I was in awe of the plaster background, the tea cup and painted setting, as well as the tag and other images you added to to the page you created, It is out of this world.

Alice’s was a fabulous tea shop. I simply adored the various designs and upside down pieces. Even the flowers and toadstools were simply adorable.

You were really lucky to have received a gift of afternoon tea. Those sandwiches looked wonderful and the scones were gorgeous. I can see why you couldn’t eat it all. What a fun feast, and more for sharing the next day.

Thanks for sharing your gorgeous tea inspired art, as well as Alice’s Tea Shop with us for T this Tuesday.

  4. I have just pulled up a chair to join you at that delightful tea room .. Jo I would spend ages sitting there to enjoy looking at all that there is inside, never mind that delicious looking afternoon tea you had while there.
The page you made to remember the visit is fabulous, I love the background cracks and the vintage china. Also the quote really appeals to me, friendships mean so much to us all.
Thank you for another awesome page for my AJJ theme this month Jo.
    Happy T day

    • That’s so funny, my hubby always laughs at me as I’m a bit like a bunny in the headlights when I first arrive at Alices as there is so much to see. The quote really spoke to me too and I immediately thought of the T Gang, I’m so grateful to have met so many lovely friends here in blogland 🙂 . Thanks for your kind comments and wishing you a very Happy T day Yvonne! J 🙂

  5. Oh that tea-shop is delightful. I saw your photos of your previous visit and was completely taken with it then. It is so quirky and there are so many things to see. I wish I could go there. That would have been my ideal birthday treat. We are coming to the UK in the last few days of August into September. But I doubt whether we would venture that far north. Where was it again? But I tell you, I would certainly travel a considerable distance especially to experience that tearoom. Who knows.
The cakes looks delish. The ‘eat me’ is no doubt inspired by the ‘drink me’ label on the magic potion for Alice. The ‘I am late’ table is fascinating. I could go on!
Your journal page is great. The background is very good. Well done. Very effective.
    Happy T-Day

    • Thanks so very much Lisca! The tea room is in St. Annes on the Sea in Lancashire and I’ve now added a link to their website to my post. It’s well worth a visit if you are nearby? It’s an amazing place, there is so much attention to detail with regard to the both the decor and the food and drink. Not only do they have “eat me” cakes, they have “drink me” soda called Alice’s Special Potions which is lemonade or cola served with a flavoured liquid served in a conical flask – amazing! Happy to send you more information if you need them and please let me know if you are able to fit a visit into your trip 🙂 . Happy T Day! J 🙂

  9. What a delicious post this was Jo – that last photo has got me longing for a nice piece of gooey chocolate cake now (just as well I re-read that as I wrote ‘goosey’ which probably wouldn’t be a nice flavour for a cake 🙂
