All Things Pumpkin

As you may know I love all things pumpkin, so today my page gives thanks to this autumnal treat. I’m also pleased to say a big hello to the T Gang over at T Stands for Tuesday – Happy T day!pumpkin-spice-ajp

The background is inspired by a great technique I discovered on one of my blog friend’s posts and I just had to try it out. Her site is called Blending Colours and here’s the post. Although I didn’t have the exact same products I decided to improvise and give it a go using Colourcraft Brusho Colours and Liquitex matte gel medium. So I sprinkled two colours of Brusho Powders onto the page then painted gel medium over the top using a wet paint brush (as I found it thins down the gel medium). I made sure that I kept the brush strokes in the same direction and was rewarded with this lovely wood grain effect. I really like the colour variation and think this is because each Brusho colour is made of separate colour components. Once the gel medium had dried I added a border using ink from a Faber-Castell Big Brush marker and an old plastic gift card and added highlights using a Uniball Signo white gel pen. Next I applied the sentiments which are rub-on transfers by Royal & Langnickel and the label from a bottle of Pumpkin Spice syrup. As we had discovered the syrup in a Moose Coffee shop I cut a moose out of paper from a Craft Asylum Paper Pad, then I outlined it with a black Sharpie marker and stuck it to the page using double-sided foam tape. To finish I punched out some hearts from the same paper and stuck them to the page using a UHU Stic, outlining them with a Uni Pin black marker once the glue had dried.  This new technique with the gel medium and Brusho powders is certainly one I will try again, I think there are endless applications for this effect.

Last week you may remember seeing Linda’s delicious pumpkin roll that she had baked. I was so impressed I decided to try making one myself. This is the recipe I found and although it rose too high making it a little thick to roll, it was still light and fluffy and tasted wonderful. Definitely one I’d have again and it was perfect with a nice cup of tea. Thanks for the inspiration Linda, although I’d love to try your recipe as it looks so much more professional than mine!pumpkin-ale

Our pumpkin beer is finally ready to drink, so over the weekend we decided to try it. It came out really nice with a lovely hint of pumpkin and the smell of pumpkin spices. This is the 27th batch of beer that my hubby has brewed, it’s a nice coppery colour and came in at 5.78% abv (alcohol by volume). We first had pumpkin beer on holiday (vacation) in Maine at Federal Jacks bar in Kennebunkport where they serve it with a shot of spiced rum added, so to remain authentic, we tried it that way too. It’s so nice and warming on a cold autumn day, though I limit myself to only one as it’s quite potent!

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you.

  1. Wowww! I loveee your background, how lovely it is and really is like woodgrain. You gave me other ideas 🙂 That’s why I love this community, people share with each other and innovate over it. It’s amazing! And thank you so much, you’re very kind to mention my blog. Have a great rest of week!

  2. what a super technique on your beautiful page! (love the moose). Your pumpkin roll looks equally delicious (thanks for the mention of mine)! I’ll see about putting my recipe on my blog. It’s just that I know things don’t always translate very well outside the US. Pumpkin beer and pumpkin roll-YES!! Happy T day Jo!

    • Thanks very much Linda! Your are very welcome and thanks again for the inspiration :-). Thanks for thinking of putting the pumpkin roll recipe on your blog, it is very kind of you! I bake many American recipes and have measuring cups etc although I know what you mean – I find that sometimes the ingredients don’t translate very well :-). Wishing you a Happy T Day! Jo x

  3. I actually like YOUR interpretation of the technique better than hers. I’ve never heard of infusions, but I have heard of brushos. Unfortunately I’ve never seen either product in my town. Still, yours is simply gorgeous.

I’m so glad you like that beer. It looks lovely, although I’m not a drinker. Just because I don’t drink doesn’t mean I won’t serve it to you if you decide to visit some day. Of course, it won’t be pumpkin beer unless it’s close to Thanksgiving.

The two pumpkin rolls I made were also large like your roll. I had trouble rolling mine and had to stop several times or it would have broken. I think you did a fantastic job.

Thanks for sharing your lovely art, your fabulous beer, your lovely looking pumpkin roll, and your tea with us for T this Tuesday. Happy Thanksgiving from one celebrant to another.

    • Thanks so much! I am so grateful to get the inspiration from my blog-friend – I loved this technique and she created such an awesome page :-). I love that you made pumpkin rolls too, I thought it was pretty good for my first attempt and is definately something I will try and make again. Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving and a lovely T Day! 5. A lovely post to read today. The journal page looks super, I will have to try that background technique, some time.,
The pumpkin roll looks yummy, I can almost imagine the taste.
Your husband’s beer looks great as well, it looks a good label on the bottle as well. Do you design them?
    Happy T Day

    • Thanks very much Yvonne! The technique is so simple to do and I know how you love using your Brushos :-). The cake was full on pumpkin flavour, it may have been because I roasted our own pumpkin – delicious! No we don’t design labels for the beer, my hubby only puts numbers on the bottle caps so we can identify which beer it is, in this case number 27 – which indicates the batch number :-). Wishing you a very Happy T Day! Jo x

  6. I love your page Jo-especially that little moose. It really finishes off the page. And I think your pumpkin roll came out fantastic. I made a strawberry cream roll once and its little scary that they will crumble when you roll them (even if you roll them warm) so my applause for making a perfect looking roll. No biggie if its a little thick, as long as it tastes good that’s all that counts. 🙂 Glad to hear how your beer came out and that it tastes good. I’ve never tried it with a shot of anything else but I bet it tastes really good. Happy T day. Hugs-Erika

    • Thanks so much Erica! I think the roll was a good first attempt and although the recipe looks complicated it’s really not and I had so much fun too! I think adding a shot to the beer makes it a cocktail, don’t you … lol :-). Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving and T Day! Jo x

  7. That’s a great page! I remember reading about the moose cafe and how you bought the pumpkin syrup. And I must say the pumpkin roll looks delish! I have yet to find a recipe that doesn’t use canned pumpkin (not available in Europe). We have to process a pumpkin ourselves, which is not a problem. But I don’t know what they have added to the canned pumpkin, flavour wise. Would they have added sugar? If I just used (cooked) pumpkin pulp, would it taste the same?
And your beer looks very nice too. I am truly curious what it tastes like. (as pumpkin has very little taste). And I bet it goes well with the spiced rum.
It is 1:30 pm and your post has made me hungry….
    Happy T-Day,
    Hugs,

    • Thanks so much! I actually used (cooked) pumpkin pulp for my pumpkin roll and added a 1/4 teaspoon of pumpkin spice in addition to the cinnamon it has listed. You can easily make your own pumpkin spice, I’ll send you the recipe :-). Hope this helps and happy baking :-). J x

  8. Interesting technique for the background of your page and I think you achieved the perfect effect. I like pumpkin pie and am sure I would like the pumpkin roll. I don’t particularly like the pumpkin flavored coffee that is so popular.so not sure the been would be my favorite. I do admire the fact that you and your DH are into home brewing through.

  9. What a fantastic page Jo! Always good to mix colours with acrylic binder ore glue – you got them more translucent and the time to manipulate the colors is longer – I unfortunately have no brushos ( they are so expensive here and my art online shop just sells big bottles of colour-pigments ( also too expensive) – but I have a great box of very good quality hard pastels – and by scraping away the pigment of them with a little knife I get wonderful powder that reacts kind like brusho – ( a blogfriend recently made this with watercolorpencils and got good results as well)even though it is maybe not sooo high pigmented like the expensive brushos.
I have some of the Derwent inktense Blocks as well.. they are even better to scrap pigment away for brusho effects – and they are permanent after the water is dry without using any binder or medium … love them so much.
********YOUR BEER AND THIS CAKE looks sooo good!
Would love to try it both!!!
Happy T-Day and thanks a lot for this wonderful page linked to Art Journal Journey!

    • Ooh, I have the pencils and I’d love to have the Derwent Intense Blocks, they looks so versatile and I really like the thought of using them to make sprays too! Looks like you may be busy trying out those different products using this technique – you’ll have loads of fun :-). Thanks so much Susi and wishing you a Happy T Day! J 🙂
